Suffolk or West Wales?

One of the best things we love about our Campervan is the flexibility in deciding where to go at short notice. It’s also one of the biggest drawbacks because it means we keep changing our minds. For some time we planned to visit Suffolk from our home in SE Wales at Easter. However we are now having second thoughts as we love West Wales and it is a somewhat shorter drive. What are your thought? Is Suffolk a great place for me and my wife and dog to visit for a week?

Never been to Suffolk but I can certainly recommend West Wales. Are you into a one-stop visit or a bit of a mini tour?

Bit of both. Probably two or three camping spots

Personally I would keep Suffolk till the weather is a little nicer, if you’re going all that way want to be able to get out and explore.

Best bit of Suffolk for me are the coastal towns and villages from Woodbridge to Southwold. We also enjoy walks in the forest around Tunstall and Rendlesham. There are a couple of interesting National Trust sites too if your into that.

Generally Suffolk is drier than Wales.

Thank you. We love Marloes Beach near Dale. World class. But can Suffolk compare?

Wales has more interesting beaches than Suffolk but as someone else said Rendlsham forest is great. RSPB Minsmere is on the coast and it is nice to walk along to the coast there but it is the North Sea which is very gray.

You may wish to consider the fact that you will have to drive on the M4 past Newport and the M25 at Easter to get to Suffolk.A12 has a lot of roadworks. Is it easier to take the M4 passed Swansea?

Suffolk has a long beach and a marshland. Nothing like steep hills and seas in ur pic.
Orford has a great bakery (better than posh london ones) and the award winning chocolatier (Pump Street Chocolate). Hiking through wetland/marshland is very pleasant. Do not miss Southwold quay where the freshest fish shops with a great atmosphere you will love. If you love to see birds and long sandy beaches, Suffolk is perfect.

This is my preferred route between Suffolk and East Wales via A14 and M50. Stopping of in Worchester , St Neots or Cambridge could be an option.

Been to both and love both. If the weather was grim I think I'd prefer to be in Suffolk though. Wantisden Park is handily placed for Woodbridge and Aldburgh, with great forest walks right from the site.

Grey North Sea v Brown Bristol Channel.

Brown Bristol channel has a bigger tidal range making it exciting making in sure you move out of the bays before the tide come in. When I first moved from Glamorganshire to Suffolk I found the tide movement strange and people thought I was odd carrying an umbrella all the time. Also sunsets are very quick in the east as no mountains to give the impression of longer twilight.

Where are you looking to go in west wales? South or north or both?

Probably West South Wales/Pembrokeshire we know well and love it. The question is whether we should break with tradition and drive further to Suffolk. What do people tend to do? Explore new places or revisit the lovely places they've been before? (especially if its less far to drive). Is Suffolk worth the extra drive?

Somewhere new! Otherwise you’ll never know the difference. Same old same old is safe and predictable………. but hey, it’s a big world out there just waiting to be explored

Your West Wales seems to be fairly local where as Suffolk may feel like a real tour. Both are great locations, Suffolk may feel very different from your home in Wales.

Not as different as when I moved to Suffolk from Cardiff 50 years ago. Shops closed at lunch time and credit card were rare. More traffic now than then, used to be able to walk down the middle of the street in villages. The forests or near the RSPB site is now only places where I go cycling as I do not like the narrow roads with fast cars passing. However the county has a lot countryside and the towns are relaxed. Framlingham castle has been made famous by Ed Sheeran.
