Swiss travel pass confusion! Murren/Schilthorn

Can someone take the confusion out of the Swiss cablecar prices and travel passes for me?!

We want to re-visit Switzerland this year and will be staying in Lauterbrunnen again but just for 4 days. Last time, we travelled up to Gimmelwald and Murren by cable car and just paid for that section of the route without using any passes. This time, we're considering going further up that route to Schilthorn.

There are 5 of us (3 kids). I gather there's a Swiss Travel Pass and a Swiss half price pass. But I'm finding the websites very confusing.

Is the half price pass better for short term tourist visits like ours and if I buy the pass, do I then still need to purchase half price tickets for that full route (Stechelberg>Gimmelwald>Murren>Schilthorn) or is any of the route included in the cost of the pass itself?

I don't know what else we'd use the pass for - suggestions welcome!

Hi, we stayed at Lauterbrunnen for 3/4 nights and purchased the 3 day Swiss Travel Pass. If you purchase 2 adult tickets and apply for a free Swiss Family card then your children (under 16) can travel free. We thought it was the best option as the tickets can be bought beforehand in the UK, no hassle paying at any ticket office then you just wave your passes. It was valid on trains,buses, all the Murren,Schilthorn area cablecars and even a free cruise on Lake Thun or Brienz. Well worth it in our opinion. There can be a lot of cloud on the top of Schilthorn so I did the trip twice to get good photos so the all in ticket was worth it for that, day trip prices are about £80 adult £40 child without a pass. Hope this helps.

In the summer you can get a regional pass which covers all the trains buses and most cable cars. This site looks like it covers a lot of options. For a 4 day pass it's CHF 250 per adult and CHF 30 per child (they are free on everything then) adults pay 50 % up the Scilthorn then. It's a massive area covered and even includes the hosts on the lakes. It's amazing how far kids walk to get to a boat, cable car or train.
