The redish / orange LCD display at the center of the dashboard has become almost un-readable.
Sometimes, it shines a bit more and becomes readable, but soon after becomes extremely dim.
I ordered one from China but with the poor packaging, it arrived shattered.
Does anyone have a good source for this part, and also some hints to take the dash panel down ?

Hi TrippleBee,
Are you kind of handy?
Well, it depends... I converted my roof from hydraulic to manual, but I'm really no good with circuits and electricky stuff.

The only replacement LCD I found for T5's is over 80 € , and it seems to require flux and soldering and having tiny fingers.
I figured that I might stand a better chance with a used (but not TOO used) instrument cluster which is kind of easy to replace.

Any thoughts ?

Replacing an instrument cluster can involve reprogramming your keys (only at VW), plus you can't reset the mileage.
There are some companies that do the repair too. Don't know in the UK though.

The very first vertical line on my display has been dim
for a while.
Instead of reading Navigation i just see Vavigation cos the first
part of the N is missing, when i looked
into it there were a few firms online that repair them but i meant
that i had to remove the -speedo cluster - and send it to them.

I had a quick look and it could be that the steering wheel might need to
come off to get it out.
So steering wheel, airbag, re-programming maybe?

I went off to have a cold beer or two weighing up how much this
display troubled me, that was a few years ago.
But it seems that it is a common problem across the whole VW range, so there
are people who can do a fix, just none close to where i live.

Don't think the steering wheel has to come off if you have adjustable steering column.
I got mine out once for a rattling noise behind the instrument cluster.
You just have to unclip the top plastic part of the dashboard above the IC.
You might also have to dismantle the under part of the dashboard around the steering column as I think there are 2 screws, but I don't know anymore. They can be on top also.

And you are probably reading " Vavigation"
