the outside handle for the sliding door sometimes does not work
seems a bit random the inside one always works 2017 T6 electric sliding door
anyone else had this issue?

yes van unlocks ok, just sometimes the external handle will not open or close the door, it usually starts working again after the van has been locked for a while and then unlocked

When you press to unlock the van, although you hear the unlock sounds, does it actually unlock the sliding door? Sounds like the issue we had recently but ours isn't an electric door. Unlocked the van and you couldn't hear the sliding door unlock and the inside bit didn't pop up (there is a distinct clunck when the sliding door unlocks). Started off doing it every so often but then ended up 9 times out of 10 it wouldn't unlock. Had VW look at it and they changed the locking mechanism for the door as it wasn't working - we have 2019 beach with extended warranty so it was covered.

yes unlocking does unlock the door but sometimes the external handle will not work for opening or closing

It will most likely be this part:

This controls the central locking/unlocking system of the sliding door.
I had the same issue on my T5.1. It's called a remote lock, because the "real" lock is at the rear, but that is just the lock. The central locking system is inside this part.
In the doors, this part is one with the lock, but much smaller.

it may seem a daft question but as there is no visible cable between the door and the van how does the handle tell the motor to operate when the door is open? is there a battery powered transmitter or something?
