Having booked a hire Cali for 5 days at half term my "lovely" teenagers who are 14 and almost 17 have decided that their parents are completely mad and very uncool. After a few weeks of Mexican stand off they are still refusing to come with us, so I have arranged to ship them off to Granny and grandpa's instead. Being queen of stubborn I am still going camping, with hubby and 2 mongrels. We plan on Exmoor and/or Dartmoor. Any tips on where to go and what to take with us gratefully received. Of course, this does mean that my husband and I will have to speak to each other .... Yikes !

Hi Mrstee,
If you are hiring a Cali to try it out before buying one then the last thing you need is a couple of sulky ship mates to help cloud your judgement. Thank goodness for Granny and Grandpa!
Enjoy your break.

I look forward to the day when I have my mutinous grandchildren deposited with me .....

They may even have the painful experience of having to listen to granny giving a lecture on Spithead ... :shocked

I stopped here http://www.newberryvalleypark.co.uk/pages/home a few weeks ago.

A beautiful setting in the lovely coastal town of Combe Martin, lovely walks up to Great Hangman, the highest point on the SW Coastpath, superb Exmoor forests all around, the Hunters inn a must-visit place. Lovely coastal walks towards Ilfracombe if you don't want the exertion of going the other way and walking the switchback Exmoor coastline.. Excellent facilities.

Exmoor house at Dulverton. Excellent CC site right in the village with a surprisingly good choice of eateries including a Thai bizarrely. Tarr Steps only a short drive away.

Sent from my Galaxy S6

Also Tavistock C&CC site. Lovely walks onto dartmoor from the site

I definitely agree that you don't want stroppy teenagers in tow for your initial experience.

Several years ago when we bought our first T4 Cali we headed off to Dartmoor and chose an "adults only" :embarrased site Woodland Springs (no not one of those!!) and it was great as the facilities were fantastic and it wasn't too busy.

My preference these days is something a little more basic, but for a first time break, you can't beat having the top notch facilities on site. It's in a very good location with easy access to all the stunning scenery.

Oh no you definitely don't want them with you! We've just returned from a weekend in the Lakes without the teenagers (but with the 2 hounds) & it was absolutely heavenly!
I keep reminding my husband that when they've gone it'll just me & thee and I need to know I still like him as much as I did before they arrived

Hmmm they may change their tune when they realise how super cool these machines are! We have just returned from ferrying teens to a group pop up shop in Camden followed by a Fall Out Boy and Professor Green concert at Wembley.

What other vehicle could provide cool drinks in the fridge, a range of snacks in the kitchen cupboards, somewhere to change into the horrendously priced but essential band t-shirt, and a crash pad after the concert?

We got lots of attention for Zebedee at uber cool Camden, from some well known actors / pop stars too.

I was even tempted to go to the concert in Bournemouth and camp overnight.

And don't even mention Festivals.

Better luck with them, although I am sure you will have fun on your own!

Thanks everybody, great ideas, we're really looking forward to it ! Some of our teens' friends now think we're very cool to get a camper ! Ha ha, I haven't been cool for ages ! Granny and grandpa are looking forward having the teens...they will get their PCs updated and sorted out. They're planning on go-karting too (last time grandpa got stuck in the Kart but enjoyed it...they're quite cool too !).

Sounds fab... Oddly teenager #2 went to FOB in Bournemouth on Saturday ! I daren't wash that T shirt...bet it shrinks !
As I presume you drive in London can I please ask if you have any problems with LEZ ? We can't take our old Landy in ! Not that we want to very often. Thanks

I'm glad we're not the only ones. The Mrs and I are also looking forward to the day when we don't have to ferry sullen teens around - then we can escape !!

All of sudden, when teenage-hood struck the Cali became very uncool. Funny thing is, all my daughter's pals think it's cool. But it's very uncool when it's your Dad driving a vehicle that no one else owns for miles around ...

I keep telling my daughter it's now under her skin and she'll end up owning a camper van, just as we did (much to her disgust). I'll get the last laugh.

We picked our teenager up from a sailing trip and ended up with 5 of them oohing over the van.
We keep ours happy by unexpectedly exciting rib wildlife trips, Mog about off road tours and trips to the Nurburg ring. Funded by the savings made by staying on cheap campsites.
One things for sure it's way more cool than the N reg Toyota Granvia with the daisies

I drive frequently in London. No problem with the LEZ. Most vehicles registered since 2002 are OK, but check here https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/low-emission-zone/check-if-your-vehicle-is-affected?intcmp=2266
Vehicles with EU5 or 6 engines are definitely OK.

No problems till 2020 and then a daily charge! Enjoy your time away.

Is why I have 6 dogs. No arguments and they love ZuluCampI. Bring some fab gifts back for grandparents and 0 for teenagers. o_O

What does your statement relate to. Cannot find anything relating to changes in 2020. Although by then the T7 will probably be available.

Found it - London Ultra Low Emission Zone. Payable within the present Conjestion Zone ONLY, not the larger Low Emission Zone. In operation 24/7.

Proposed £12.50/day.

So, still cheaper to pay Conjestion Charge + Ultra Low Emission Charge + London Parking + Fuel than 2 Day Returns on First Great Western.:thumb:thumb:thumb

We're back ! Despite the dodgy Dartmoor weather we would do it again and had a great time. (So did the teenagers and grandparents who stayed in civilisation !). For a proper taster of Cali life, we decided on basic sites and no meals out. We didn't manage to use either the awning or roof bed as it was way too windy. I thought others may like to hear our verdict.
Plus points :
We found the downstairs bed really comfy with just our self inflating mattresses, no topper required.
Bacon butty and a brew for breakfast while a storm raged outside, fab.
Dogs slept on drivers and passenger seat, and didn't bark in the night... Phew.
Did not get stuck in the mud like the motorhome on the same site.
Went down little lanes and up big hills, no problem, a nice vehicle to drive (140 manual)
Lots of places to put stuff, but we couldn't remember what got stuffed where, we weren't very organised.
Camped off EHU at pub and a basic camp site and took our own stew / curry etc to warm up.
Great freedom to go anywhere anytime
Fridge and hob great, but not sure we really needed a sink.
Dogs had a fab time, only found 1 tick so far !
minus points :
Still getting over the need to let off handbrake to swivel driver's seat ! It was a 15 reg van, so they really ought to have an electronic handbrake.
As it was our first hire we had too much bedding with us.
We didn't use the heater as when we opened the sliding door a lot of diesel fumes entered, most unpleasant. We didn't want to sleep with that smell.
So in the morning we had a lot of condensation, but were snug as a bug.
We also had too much cooking kit from the hire company, and should have taken some of it out of the van before departing, making more room in the cupboard.
Wet dogs and walking boots are smelly !
Too many beers resulted in 2 trips to the loo in the storm for Mr T in the night. (Will get him a bucket for Christmas, as he's unlikely to give up beer !)
We kept forgetting to get things out of the cupboard and drawer before putting up the table and loading it up, with the dogs settling underneath it. This is something I guess you get used to.
Seats had no covers and were marked, I would get seat covers or leather seats !
So :
Would we hire again ? Yes, although it does restrict the flexibility as it was a 90 mins drive to pick the van up and you have to book well in advance. We would have gone a weekend earlier if we had our own van, as the weather was much better. Our house is still full of wet washing ! I will keep an eye on the Cali club hire project.
Would we buy now ? No - partly because we need the teenagers to be old enough to stay home alone if they don't want to come along and partly due to the cost; we want to keep our Landy too and at a push could use it instead for short trips. Has Mr T started planning a bed for the Landy ? Yes.....help !

I hope you guys don't mind if I stay a forum member, there's always something interesting to read even though we're not looking to buy at the moment. Mrs T.

Bed help for a Landy is available, have a look at Nene Overland, they do roof tents ( Hannibal ) for a Landy. Have to mind those steps though Mr T.

If you are looking for ideas for kitting out a Landy for camping, the Adventure Overland show has some great examples. Unfortunately you've just missed this years, as it is always in September.

In the mean time, check out Lizzie Bus (most up to date stuff is on Facebook, but there is a website), they've just rebuilt it and headed off around the world again, and it's lovely, if a bit small, inside.

Thanks guys, we'll keep it pretty basic and add as we go hopefully, without going over the top !
