some 5000 miles along the magical Cali road and I became increasingly aware that the gear shift diagram on top of the stick was fading away to the point of being indistinct... immediately suspecting increased vision loss / need for new spectacles/ onset of some limiting condition/ lamentable evidence of failure to clean anything / incredibly abrasive skin on palm/ ... I cleaned / inspected everything with no obvious answer. Happening to be in for a first service ( nearly two years, I know 5000 m isn't much and will try to do better ) I queried the issue and the dealer arranged to have it replaced under warranty without a raised eyebrow, 'well I've never seen that before " or any other suggestion of surprise.....

We also have a 10 year old Golf with a totally pristine gear stick diagram.

now this is clearly the most minor of things but, abrasive palms aside, anyone else experienced / had explanations for / the curious incident of the gear stick in the Cali ??

Hand cream wrecked a leather steering wheel on a Nissan micra I used to own!
