just a thought
I don't see many old calis
I see a few 08 and 58 reg ones
is it possible they are written off after any accident's etc
and then the money we get does not cover the cost of the next one due to book prices being low compared to replacement costs
thoughts ?

I also wonder about this. Over the last three years or so the T5’s seem to have been almost completely replaced by T6’s. Where are they going? Is there a “California Triangle” somewhere?

Maybe because the ones manufactured from 2004 I think to 2006 were left hand drive so might not have been a big uptake on them until they changed to right hand drive in 2007 Folks might not have realised about the steering wheel position and we’re slow to purchase in 2007 so maybe not to many about.
Ours was first registered in June 2007, still in superb condition and thankfully not written off:thumb

Well, my recently bought 08 Reg 2.5 174dsg is doing well & has just passed its habitation check with flying colours.
My last and identical one an 07 reg which I foolishly sold on to a friend in 2010 for £30K is still going strong. The "new" one cost me £31K (58K mileage with full VW service record). Had I back in 2010 had any idea of how slowly these depreciate I'd have hung on to the first one!
Mind you, the 07 one sprang a leak in the roof pump and had to be totally stripped down to the floor to be repaired & a few months out of warranty! However, the then manager at Carrs in Exeter supported me strenuously in getting VW to cough up for half the £5.5K cost.

The 08 I have still has it's original roof canvas & works just fine so far, but I have yet to get up there & inspect for rust. And yes, the 2.5 174 dsg version is not by any means economical to run, but run it does & so much fun!

My 2006 Cali is approaching its 12th birthday, and is a pleasure to drive, in fact leaving next week for the 900 mile drive home, it will have by then covered 142000 miles. August it passed mot with one advisory, MIGHT need a new exhaust next year.
Love the 5 cyc engine, and chain driven no cam belt or water pump needed at 4yrs.
I will keep it, love my love bus

The pre-T5.1 vans weren’t pushed very hard by VW and also we had The Crash in 2008 which hit a lot of vehicle sales period, luxury items more so. Perhaps that’s it. VW were a lot more pro-active when the 5.1 came along. At least that’s how it seemed.

Lovely 2008 just gone for sale on here with (wait for it) 11k miles (in 10 years). So perhaps some of them are tucked up warm in garages awaiting future classic status!

I was talking with a Brit yesterday on our way to Denmark , he was next to us in a Mercedes panelvan witch was selfconverted in a camper.
His words: you almonst don’t see any California’s in the UK ...
So are all of you here the only one’s ?
Guess lots of conversions.
The olderones do get rare as they won’t last forever , but travelling thru Germany yesterday and Denmark today i did saw a looot of T4 california’s .
Even a T5 with Beach on the side , coulden’t see if it was actually a Beach (if it ever existed on the T4 ?)
France has also plenty of T4 Cali’s on the road.

I imagine when @WelshGas reads this he'll need a long lie down.....

Well that's definitely one off my list.

Madness. Complain about the cost of buying one and then leave it in the garage. Then someone will buy it, what a good bargain and then complain about the cambelt going or the AirCon not working, or the cost of the unexpected service as the owners were waiting to get to 12,000 miles to get it serviced.:headbang:headbang:headbang:headbang:headbang

Yeah.
But lets just pretend that you were a young lad and you´ve saved up all of
your pocket money and you weren´t welsh.Lol.

Choice is - 2008 cali with 180,000 miles 29k
Or - 2008 cali with 11,000 miles 30k

Even an old classic car from the 60´s
One with 300,000 and one with 120,000.
Its not all about the belts and stuff, the interior will be
in better shape on a low miler.
I would always be drawn to the lower milage and then be prepared
to follow the service plan.

To be clear, I wasn't knocking the low mileage van... I think it's a good offer... Its just we rely on WG to remind us to use them properly!

I can't find it? Has it been taken off already, or has the mileage been adjusted?!

Spend 30K, yes and the rest. Very much doubt if it has been serviced correctly during that time. 5 new tyres, all fluids, probably repairs to AirCon etc. Brakes, suspension bushes, water pump, possibly fuel pump, all new filters and god knows what might happen to the Hydraulic roof and canvas.

If it had been properly stored maybe but the likelihood of that is very, very remote.

There isn't much to go wrong with the interior that a set of seat covers and a carpet wouldn't fix, if they are worn.

It think it may have been, unless I dreamt it.

So the air con will need looking at, full service including belts etc, leisure battery replacement and a full set of tires.
I wonder about the roof hydraulics etc etc...???

Cars are like humans, it’s no good sitting still doing nothing for a longtime .

My 57’ with 74000 mls is currently sitting in a VW main dealer’s garage in Plasencia, Spain.
Shortly to be brought back to Bristol on the back of a breakdown truck.
For more info see the post I’m just about to write....

Not if it's had an owner that's had it serviced regularly, people being a bit presumptuous just because of low miles, not neglect. There's a difference.
