Hi All, I am off for some winter hiking in the Beacons. Any recommendations for a van site. All we need are hot showers and a good view......and open in the winter. Thanks

Updated 1st post on C&CC website says open from 1st Jan not sure if you are a member

Nope, not a member. I avoid sites as much as poss, as I like being in the middle of nowhere. My brother is coming with me and wants a shower, and it will be a bit cold in the rivers at the moment .
Though I could try putting some hot water in my shower bag, and using it inside my new toilet tent.......more experimenting needed here.

That last place Erlwon looks nice though

We are always up for nice out of the way small sites but the issue is finding them open before Easter and even harder if you want showers.

Always wild camp and use a local swiming pool for a swin and a shower

The swimming pool is a good idea, as wild camping appeals so much more. I have just walked past Ladrum bay holiday park today ....and it looks like a prison camp!

I stayed here once: http://parcbrynbach.co.uk/

Is okay, nothing special, but it is open. Think the showers were a bit of a walk, but it was a few years ago and might be thinking of somewhere else. Couple of piccies of the site on our blog (https://bettybus.wordpress.com/2013/03/15/brecon-beacons/)

As an aside, there has been a lovely programme about the Brecons on BBC Wales over the last couple of weeks. Available on iPlayer here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b06wpz6q
Thanks for that, the parc looks OK. I see they do "hot dogging" which is presumably dogging but with beautiful people. The van will be ideal for that!!

Hi Cyclopath,

We live in The Brecon Beacons.
There are a lot of sites in the area. Some are not open in the winter and some don't take touring vans.
These are some of the best rated with good locations and excellent facilities. You can google them.

Brynich Campsite
Pencelli Castle campsite
Bishops Meadow campsite.

All these are pretty central to Brecon itself.

If those are not what you are looking for get back to me and I will see what I can find out for you.

Hi all, good information, I'll also use it. Do someone knows any recommended spot for wild camping around there?

I just use the carparks. There are plenty tucked away in the woods, most marked on the OS map. Try round Talybont Reservoir.

image.png Here looks quite nice. I think it is where I was planning on going.
I have parked there before walking up Pen y Fan from the south. It looks secluded and sheltered in the forest, and you wouldn't disturb anybody. It's up from Talybont Reservoir

Yes, that's a useful feature.

I was just looking back, haven't been to the Beacons since late 2013! It's been too long...

We always stay here although we have only stayed in the summer. Good pub just across the road and you can walk from the site as well as visit the caves. Camp-site for caravans, vans and tents at National Show Caves for Wales. Often used by Duke of Edinburgh students.

Barbara, that looks a great place, different part of the mountains, and my daughter( and I ) would love to go down the caves
Thanks

We've just watched those BBC episodes and are quite good ones, now we're more than keen to pay a visit to the Brecon Beacons. Probably this weekend we'll make our first visit

Great.......even better, I didn't realise you could get free OS mapping from Bing. Thanks for that
Slightly off topic, but the 'back country navigator' android app (free or £1.5 without ads) uses the bing os maps. I just download as much as I need onto my phone before my trip, and use it and GPS for walking, finding wild spots etc whilst I'm away. OS version was charging £8 per 'tile' to do the same thing.

Mimage.jpegHi, just thaught I would report back, after the trip to the Beacons. Thanks for all the advice.
I also thaught it would add to the knowledge base for the future.
We arrived just after midday, and a quick hike up the Sugarloaf , for sarnies on the top, made the most of day one

Then onto Talybont reservoir,

The car park was well sheltered in a beautiful forest, by a stream, but filthy.
We decided to clean it, as a sort of thank you for the nights stop. There were a lot of those little snap bags you get small amounts of dope in, and a lot is strong cider cans.

The next day, an adventure group came, and the leader was telling me lots of folks come up from the valleys, so steal and deal. He had had his van broken into and dry children's clothing stolen, he wouldn't recommend leaving bikes on the back of a van!
The hike up Fanny Big and Peny Fan was amazing, if a bit cold and blowey at times.
We then went to Brecon to the Nepalese restaurant for supper, and paid 17 quid for a local campsite. My brother wanted a shower. As it happened showers were extra. It was a nice site by a river, but I could not really see the point in paying when we had such luxurious facilities on board.image.jpeg
Next day was wild weather so we went down to Yastrafelte, and a great walk past many stunning reservoirs.
We spent the night in a small car park on a no through road. I was glad of the small size of the van, and the powerful engine, to negotiate the lane.
Then a bit more hiking, local pubs etc.
All in all , a great trip

That's my brother. First time in a camper van since our parents T1 in the 60s.

Lovely just back from the Brecon Beacons ourselves around Llantony but in a cottage. Will return in the Cali when we get it and look up your post again then.
