Hi all, can anyone reccomend a decent workshop manual for my 1991 T4 california?
I don't think Haynes do one for the T4.

There does seem to be a Haynes manual coming, according to posts on the T4 Forum.

Just read some of the reviews on Amazon though and this manual gets some really bad reviews. Think I'll leave it for the time being and keep any eye out for the new Haynes manual
Any ideas when this is due?

Sorry to resurrect an older thread but I've been looking for one too.

Will probably get the haynes manual when it comes out (currently saying September) but would be useful to have something with us when we go abroad in the summer just incase!

Has anyone got one of these:

Our van's a '92 high top westfalia california LHD - the green manual on amazon etc seems to get really bad reviews so seems like a waste of money to get that one.

Anyone seen a copy of that manual at all?>

The Haynes manual is now available.

Covers SWB and LWB 2wd diesel models from '90 to '03, including both manual and auto boxes.

Doesn't include anything Westfalia specific and is for RHD vans, obviously there are a few little differences between LHD and RHD models.

For those who want more detail try searching eBay for ELSAWIN but be aware it does not cover pre 1994 vehicles but it will cover your T5 when you upgrade

By the way Haynes told me many years ago in an email that they would not be publishing a T4 manual because they thought the T4 too complex for the DIY mechanic :lol:

I have the basic green cover manual mentioned here. It's pretty basic and only of limited help.

The Haynes should be better.

Between us, I think we've covered most breakages!

The changes to the T4 (long nose, 2.5tdi and vr6 engines) came around '96, so '94 on should cover most things. It's the very early (identified by a high VW roundrel on the tailgate) that have the differences I think, so far I've discovered it's got a different radiator (and I assume that means a different front crossmember as well) and the exhaust pipe mountings appear to be very slightly different.

The rear trailing arms are a little different on all models produced before the introduction of the Syncro, maybe that is the '94 model or maybe that was the introduction of rear discs.

Between us, I think we've covered most breakages!

I have a practically new van now Just the clutch and gearbox to go... On the plus side, my roof is fine

Haynes now do a T4 manual. Not Cali-specific, it covers body and mechanicals only. Bought mine for £11.75 from Ebay. Worth it.

The manual seems better than the Green one, but why such poor quality paper?

Anyway, over the winter we've found more things that are different on the very early vans.

The AAB (2.4D) engine was changed during it's life. These included:

- The original AAB had 2 aux belts. One for alternator, one for power steering. This changed in later versions of the AAB to a single aux belt powering both the alternator and power steering pump. Accordingly the pulley wheels were reduced from 2 to 1 and the location of the power steering pump was changed.

- The original AAB used the waterpump to tension the cambelt. Later versions have a fixed waterpump and a tensioner.

Very early crank cases are very hard to find and People are asking daft money for high millage complete AABs!
