Received a reminder today that the road tax would be due on 31st March. I says VW diesel car on the form...The registration number is correct, but its clearly a VW California camper! What does everyone elses say? Also is 280.00 correct for 12 months? If it was listed as a VW Camper would the price be different?

Thanks

Diesel "Car" is correct. Your V5c may state that the body type is a motor caravan, but for tax purposes it only really matters if it is N1 or M1 vehicle catagory. N1 is a commercial, primary purpose to transport goods. Or, M1, primary purpose to transport persons (as in a "car")

The rate, is variable depending on the date of first registration, engine type and fuel type. My renewal rate, at time of last renewal (in January) was £220 for 12x months. Mine's a January 2017, 150PS Manual, Diesel. You avatar says "looking to buy" so not sure what your specifics are, but £280 sounds possible for a petrol, or a 204PS Diesel perhaps.

You can use the below website to check/confirm your rate.

Just got my tax reminder and mine also shows 'Diesel Car' - I'm sure that's normal, for reason;s Jonathan gave above.

My tax is £280 - on a 2015 180PS manual diesel.

What is your cali, it doesnt sow. What model year?

Thanks

My tax demand dropped on the mat this morning.
£305. Bugger.

Mine too, 2016 150 DSG beach £190 - only bought 6 months in September as I was insuring car, house and taxing the car in the same month!

paid mine today of £220 for a 2017 204 dsg ocean ! - stated as a diesel car

What have I got under the bonnet and emitting from the tail pipe that justifies a premium tax rate?
Should I be pissed off or take it that my vehicle is better ‘cos it cost more to tax?
I mean, why pay less??
It is registered as M1 category, diesel car taxation class with a motor caravan type body.
Bugger, bugger.

how come my 150 manual beach 2016 is 220?

We got ours in September 2017 and for a 150 DSG the annual tax, after the first one, is £450.
It's a lot of money, but it is a fantastic vehicle and worth it for the freedom and pleasure it gives us.

I'm sort of dreading it in December of all months when my Cali will be a year old.
But the way I understand it so far is .....
Being a post April 17 vehicle, I will have to pay £310 + £140 = £450.
This is because the + £40k value of the new vehicle which remains in place each year for 5 years then the £140 on top.
I also believe that the latest CO2 emissions changes that held up sales of VW vans in December 2017 will not affect this. But for new vehicles the VW dealer will have to pay more when they tax it for your first year.

Unfortunately it's all about new tax rules and timing. i.e. When you took delivery of your Cali and which tax regime was in place at that time. So the tax you pay could be a surprise. I actually was expecting to pay £195.
In some cases, as was with me, the VW declared CO2 figures and those on my V05 document changed from ordering to delivery and this has caused confusion too - potential surprise number two! That said and as @SimonB said it is a lot of money but not that much in context.
Enjoy your Cali and the life. Non of us come this way again!

£240 just paid 204 DSG 4M TDi.
Like others the VW quoted level at ordered date had an un-notified upward change pre delivery. Paid invoice of £185 for first year VED.

Body type - motor caravan
Taxation Class - Diesel Car
CO2 (g/km) - 178

Mine just fell through the door £245 Tax Class : Private / Light Goods (PLG)

Mine just fell through the door £245 Tax Class : Private / Light Goods (PLG) is it more if it's classed as plg or as a diesel car? I personally want to pay little tax as possible as i think I pay enough already

It just says PLG on my tax document.

I must check that. because in think there is a difference
