A German article about the imminent announcement of Ford's new Tourneo Custom van, also the basis for the successor to the T6.1. Of course the latter with a completely different metal dress and interior, but it will come and it won't take that long.

Hopefully a bit more affordable than the very expensive ID Buzz (which will apparently come in a ‘light version camper’ due to small internal dimensions).
The successor to the california as we know it today will be based on a transporter (caravelle?) that will roll off the production line in Turkey. If the california will still get its folding roof and interior in Hannover, can be and is even plausible.

And then I think of the westfalia nugget, probably based on Ford's new tourneo custom: since the base is the same as the new transporter, will the new transporter be wider or the ford narrower? In other words, will the nugget and california become a little more competitive? Will the new california stay below the 2 meter barrier? Or become higher because the current ford (transit) tourneo custom is higher as a campervan with a folding roof than the cali of today.
Happy with our half-year-old coast and hopefully many blissful kilometers and travels ahead, yet curious about the successor, one day.

Interesting. It was bound to arrive with the T6.1 coming to the end of its build/design cycle. As they say all good things must come to an end.

Meh. The death of the Cali and non electric for certain types of vehicle is very over hyped. Having worked in the electric car industry it is a lot more nuanced than that. There is, and until a massive technology leap, remains a huge challenge over power/weight/distance ratio, which is not solved on either a Buzz nor a Ford.

To compensate for this they have to make them smaller because at 3 tonnes a Cali is nowhere near being ripe for electrification, and smaller means less practical. The Cali is already a Bijou space. Try making coffee and a bacon sarnie inside a buzz. Try traversing Europe in a Buzz at 200 miles a time With several hours recharge wait in between hops (forget 30 minutes to 80%, that's marketing spiel). If it’s free. Or works. Try sleeping 2-4 comfortably in one.

I’d love a all Electric Cali. It’s at least 10 years away and I’m not prepared to sleep in a mobile cupboard in the meantime, nor overhype myself with hopes and wishlists.

Electrifying the cali is not which I directed to but nice that you are working on that (and with the ID Buzz ‘camper’ which I also think will be purely a gimmick and not a replacement for what we know now; as I also wrote). Height and width as I mention, was… height and width actually So, although I wasn’t intentionally pointing towards the electrification, a thread can go either way and all can be fascinating Go ahead.

TBH I drilled in on the buzz bits but fully agree with your gentle pushback. Not meant to be a thread hijack. Similar comments on a Cali though. I would say over the decades us feedback and experience they have the length is just about right. Any longer and it’s not what we are looking for with 6m plus swinging about narrow UK lanes, any shorter and it, like buzz dimensions, makes a just about comfortable space a lot less so.

IMHO the current Cali is the sweet spot on height (good for the 2m carparks), width (perfect for narrow lanes) and length (just long enough to sleep AND live in).

I would say over the decades us feedback and experience they have the length is just about right. Any longer and it’s not what we are looking for with 6m plus swinging about narrow UK lanes, any shorter and it, like buzz dimensions, makes a a just about comfortable space a lot less so.

I didn't mean for a pushback, no thread hijack, in fact: for me, all contributions can be interesting. I just intended it otherwise but that's just informative.
Couldn't agree more: the length and hight is just about right. I use my coast for commuting and travels and it's the ideal vehicle for that. But also to take our daughter and son's classmates to a class trip and I really enjoy that: their enthusiasm for the California is touching.

The plug-in hybrid with a 11.8 kWh battery uses the technology used in the compact SUV Ford Kuga with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. Around 50 kilometers of electric range are planned.

As a diesel, the new Ford Tourneo Custom has a choice of 100 kW / 136 hp, 110 kW / 150 hp or 125 kW / 170 hp. An eight-speed automatic will be available as an option for the diesel engine. All-wheel drive is also available for the two more powerful engines in conjunction with automatic transmission. The manual front-wheel drive with 136 and 150 hp can be ordered with a mechanical locking differential.​

Not quite: in the UK article the link with VW is not mentioned and therefore also the new transporter. But a nice addition, nevertheless.

Eh? I have just looked at the German article and it mentions that the New Ford will also form the basis of the successor to the VW T6.1……. surely the same thing?

Indeed, but I mean that the UK article only talks about the ford and not about the link with the VW transporter. That’s all.

Euro 7 may put a spanner in the works though ...

Seems that the announcement of Euro 7 coming in on May 2025 has caused a bit of unexpected shock to the Manufacturers.

Causes issues with all vehicles including Hybrids and Electric as it also includes break dust particles and tyre particles. Electric due to their weight and tyre wear rate compared to ICE vehicle weights which are typically 32% lighter than their Electric siblings.
To achieve Euro7 it needs much more sensitive and accurate sensors which are beyond current manufacturing tolerances.
Result will be a noticeable price hike to the Customer.

Further unexpected factor is that it will apply to all vehicles not just newly designed/released ones with Manufacturers initial response being that it will not be viable to upgrade vehicles that only have up to a 2 year production run left (investment in R&D wouldn't be recovered). In other words there will be a premature production end for many current vehicles.
