Apple CarPlay is starting to annoy me on the T6.1
Any ideas how to stop the van defaulting to apple car play & booting up Spotify every time the ignition is turned on?
I want it to default to whatever was playing last - usually the radio.
The only way I can think of getting round the issue is to disable the Bluetooth connection at the van end so it will only work if I use a wired connection.

Morning Andy
There are quite a few adjustments you can make to CarPlay. In your case you can disable Spotify so that it doesn’t kick in.
I think this video will help

I think you can switch this feature off in your bluetooth preference settings on your apple phone. Go to preferences > bluetooth > click on the ”i” next to your car bluetooth name. Now you can check-uncheck CarPlay.

If you do that it boots up Apple Music instead . It's CarPlay itself that Im trying to stop working not specifically Spotify, unless I actually select it.

I just want to listen to the radio, stop for fuel, & when I turn the ignition back on I want to carry on listening to what I was before I stopped.

We listen to the radio most of the time, and (when it’s working) CarPlay for navigation. When set to nav (Google or Waze) no music apps try to play. We can also use the Phone app and leave it on this when turning off / turning on with no issues to the radio. We often find the radio volume is at zero when switching on, but in a second you can increase from the steering wheel.

I use CarPlay a lot Andy. The music never boots up. Ergo there’s definitely a setting somewhere. Good luck.

Likewise, I'll investigate and report back (probably destroying my settings status quo in the process!)

This sounds like an issue with VW's implementation here, I have CarPlay in another vehicle and it always continues playing whatever was playing last, radio or CarPlay for example

:-( another issue with the infotainment system. I don’t have the issue you have Andy but mine still refuses to retain my Satnav destinations after switching off the vehicle. Really annoying if I stop for fuel or a coffee. Citygate is investigating with VW Germany but I suspect it won’t get resolved until the next software update is available? It used to work fine so can only think it was the last software update?

I had this at first and finally found the off switch for Bluetooth which is in the Carplay settings on the console. If you ever make the mistake of doing it through Bluetooth is always defaults to that. Means the phone not charging and there is a delay. If memory serves it's app connect mirrorlink and remove the bluetooth connection option. I dare not setup as I never want to go through the pain again.

I too found, eventually, the off switch for Bluetooth - with relief - and rely on a USB connection only (thereby gaining phone charging).

I have a different Carplay question, just in case someone has an answer. I Use TomTom navigation (from my phone) via Carplay and simultaneously listen to podcasts as I drive, sometimes I want to pause then restart the podcasts and I have not yet found a way to do that via the steering wheel controls.

Has anyone worked that out?

I have only been able to pause podcasts either by going into the infotainment screen or on my iPhone: both pretty distracting.

Can't you set up the split screen with the map on one half & the podcast with its controls in one corner? you can then get to the podcast controls without changing the display.

thanks @andyinluton, I will try that but it not ideal as I will loose so much 'map'.

It doesn’t sound right Andy. I am using Apple Music rather than Spotify, but if I am listening to the radio it will revert to the radio on restart, even while using Carplay for Navigation (albeit that causes its own problems, well documented elsewhere). As a suggestion, you don't have to switch off Bluetooth on the van however. In your iPhone General Settings, go to Carplay and select the van from the list,BCF7CDF4-2ACE-403E-8EEB-2BE1B3625531.jpeg on the next page toggle CarPlay to off. This wont disable it completely, but it will only work with wired connection and phone unlock. Might be a workaround to stop Spotify firing up when you dont want it?

Identical behaviour here. Interestingly I've just checked the stereo settings (RCD300+) and there doesn't seem to be any option to select a default source (or "last used") at startup, so who knows how it makes the decision.

PS You need to charge your phone, @GrahamB ! :)

Ha - its a 2year old iPhone - always needs charging! :D

@andyinluton you suggestion turns out to be quite a good one, thanks. Whilst I would ideally like a pause button for podcasts on the steering wheel - and despite trying various different button and combinations I had no luck - using CarPlay in full screen mode for TomTom you can then press the split screen symbol in the bottom RH corner and that gives access to the podcast and pause button still with 50% navigation screen, then you can revert to full screen TomTom navigation with a tap of the navigation half of the screen.

I find “Hey siri pause my podcast” or similar works well

Thank you @The Tall Luthier, unfortunately, I heard so much about privacy invasion with Siri that I removed it from my phone: as a protest of course as I can't imagine anyone is interested in spying on me!

I don’t think it is possible to delete Siri from your iPhone. You can switch the ‘hey siri’ on and off.

@The Tall Luthier, you are right, I only switched it off.

I am pretty happy with the @andyinluton suggestion, though a pause button on the steering wheel would be even better. I did hope that some combination would get that, but no luck. Strange because you can fast forward and fast back from the steering wheel which seems less useful.

I connect using the USB as it makes sense to charge at the same time. No 'real' issues that way, but if I turn on Bluetooth on the iphone all sorts of chicanery happens!
I cannot use wireless CarPlay - way too many issues including disconnecting from CarPlay completely as soon as the radio is selected. Have to completely start again if go back to “App” mode. Any Google map destination has to be restarted. It’s like I’ve switched the engine off! USB only for me.

I really dont see the point of wireless carplay - it drains the battery so you need to plug the phone in to keep it charged, so what was the point really?

I find it very useful for short journeys, for long journeys I plug in.
