Would you know if this vehicle should come with any paper handbooks/instructions for use?

Yes. A generic Transporter Handbook for the vehicle and a separate California Handbook.

If you don't have the paper copies then you can access them both electronically via the California app under "How to and info." and then "Operating Manuals"

No, the California app is a free VW app (I have the IOS variant, but am sure the Android one is the same)

But yes also being a club member is money well spent given the help on literally every component of the California that is available on here
