When driving through sleet or snow, the Adaptive Cruise Control radar gets blocked. This ends up being an inadvertent safety feature because it’s best to not use in bad weather. However, there are often times where it gets blocked quickly but takes a long time to unblock unless I stop and clean it.

Does anyone have a better solution? A coating or something to help it clear faster (that doesn’t interfere with the radar itself)?

In such conditions then you use the Backup System. Your Right Foot, much safer.

Yeah it’s a bit poo. For years VW managed to fit wipers to headlights but failed miserably to protect the ACC array. Set off home in a blizzard from Holland yesterday. The ACC failed about 100m from the campsite. Brilliant!

Did you come to an abrupt stop, or were you able to engage the Backup System?

And the powers that be are looking to introduce autonomous cars to our roads in the next 2 years

Nothing like that. The dash just lit up like an orange Christmas tree and told me the ACC wasn’t available.

Apparently some of the latest high end VW cars sold in Northern Countries have a heated ACC sensor, but not perfect for all conditions.

Apparently the Multivan Style, that I have, do have the latest ACC system able to cope better with wintry conditions of snow and sleet, so maybe the New California does as well.

Not overly helpful. As I mentioned, I don’t use CC in truly inclement weather, but the sensor gets blocked by almost any wet + cold weather.

I wondered if some diy heating system would work, but would worry that anything added to that area would also block the radar.
