Hi All

Has any one purchased or seen in use a curved telescopic rafter made by Thule for the awning,it is designed to raise the awning fabric in the middle so that the water flows off better.
We always have one awning leg longer than the other but still last year had a rather large bulge in the awning during a downpour.

As these rafters are nearly £60 it needs to work for this price !

I bought the Fiamma rafter pro after reading another thread , its a nice piece of kit and would do the job, if only it could be attached satisfactorily to both van at one end and awning at the other.
Unfortunately i have yet to find a way of attaching it successfully as its obviously not made for the cali awning per se. :sad

Thanks for that Shaun
think I will save my £60

thanks

All the ones on Omnistor site are 2.25 - 2.75 m awnings, ours is 2 m so I would guess they are too long.
I keep meaning to ring them & ask about this.

i just lower one leg when its rains .and at night time before bed . ;)

Did that the other weekend & it rained hard whilst I was away & I now have a bulge in the awning material.

I spoke to omnister today. There is no curved rafter available for the cali awning. Reasoning being that it is only a light weight awning & not designed to be left out in anything more than light showers & light breezes.
All the rafters on their site are too long for cali awning & there is no space to mount the two required brackets.

So back to the drawing board. Next time I have my awning out I shall look at it with the view to making a curved rafter myself.

I have Thule on the brain after researching roof bars, my earlier post should have read
Fiamma rafter pro! (I have edited it now)
This is indeed a curved rail which adjusts to the required length to suit the Cali awning.
But as I stated earlier it will not stay in place un aided, rubber ends or not.
I have so far managed to make a prototype bracket for the end farthest from the van ,
There is neither the space or the fixing strength required at the van end.
If a fixing of some description could be designed the rafter pro would be ideal.

Puddle on top of the awning again after heavy rain Saturday evening despite one leg at its highest and the other at it lowest
Still after a solution with some kind of extra rafter
Has anyone sussed this yet !

I was told only the straight rafter was the right length for the Cali awning. The curved ones are too long apparently.

Just wondering why you leave it wound out? We only (very rarely) have ours out if we are actually sitting under it, or in the van with the door open.... In which case we can see if the water pools.....

I have one of these, it fits my fiamma cali awning, perhaps it is in the name "fiamma" or "thule omnistor" which is why it doesn't fit.
Leave my awning wound out all the time whilst camping.

If it is only light weight and not designed to left out why do they sell a Safari Residence Room for it?

I've just bought an extendable washing line pole (£2 Morrisons) with the aim of using to keep the boot door open in cold weather (gas struts etc), but guess it could be used to prevent pooling on the awning?

Interestingly the Safari Residence does have a appear to have middle bar for the awning and bars that clamp onto the side of the material but does't appear curve upwards so I'd guess you still need to drop a leg

Don't ask me I was just quoting what I was told. Why not ask Omnister ?

In the end, did anyone find a commercial rafter that meets VW brand awning dimensions & the connections out of the box work? ... or is it find an extendable pole and duct tape? :)

I saw this one by Fiamma, but seems pricey and not sure if it meets dimensions (says 2.5-4 meters, I assume measuring along length of van side) & connects correctly & moves out puddles with the pole going the direction.

ibis64, my wife wants to know :) .... do you think the rafter that you are using is strong enough to hang some clothes on to dry over night? a few swim suits or some shirts on hangar? ... yes, it should be a 2 birds with one thread - water puddling and drying clothes. :)
