Hi All
Dash board intermittently lighting up with ABS/ tyre pressure warning yet again. Last time it was the rear left, this time its rear right.
Part on order £10.

This will be replaced shortly when planned brake fluid replacement is due.

Due to the very poor quality of the original and the number that seem to fail it’s probably a good idea to carry a pair as spares.

The rear ABS sensors are often first to go and if one goes the other side will soon follow. The rear ones get most of the road muck compared with the front.

Hi how did you know it was this sensor? I'm currently getting a tyre pressure light and abs and traction control all the time and having to pay £100 to get an outfit to just do a diagnostic check......then I'll have to deal with the outcome and whatever that costs. It started as intermittent typre pressure light even though tyres were good so I'm thinking its the valve gizmos that need replacing but no idea really.

It depends on which tyre pressure system you have.
Indirect.uses the ABS sensors and just tells you that you have low pressure in a tyre.
Direct uses sensors in each tyre and tells you the actual pressure in each tyre. Paid for Option on new vehicle.
When an ABS sensor fails it affects tyre pressure, ABS and Traction control , hence the lights.

T5 & T6 don't have Tyre Pressure Sensors in the Rims, these use the ABS wheel rotation system only.

T6.1 has direct Tyre Pressure System with wheel sensors as an option.

Ah thanks so my T6 probably has a failed ABS sensor which is bringing all the lights on......now to figure out which one is the culprit....unless its not a sensor but something else. Hopefully the diagnostic guy can tell me

Are the T5.1 sensors compatible? Never had any problem with them in over 15 years and over 211000km.

At £100 just for diagnostics, it’d be cheaper replacing all 4 yourself!

Or buy a Carista and go from there. They’re incredibly easy to swap by the way. If you can change a wheel, you can do this.

Agree, maybe a small outlay into a diag unit will pay for itself the first time you need. In my original post my cheap eastern origin diag box that covers all vehicles in the VAG group and was able to identify the particular corner at fault (see link in op)

The box a few years back cost me around £70 by Ancel it came with free updates for life. Well worth the pennies. I have had to use it a few times on my Cali. Sorted out an air bag fault, wheel sensors. On Friends, a radio issue and also helped identify a heater problem.
Any one of those fixes would have been over a hundred to diagnose by the stealers. That’s before any fix costs.

As regards the original sensors, Welshgas is on the ball when he says it’s usually the rear first as they collect most weather and crud. This just goes to highlight in my book the poor quality of the part being fitted by VW. The sensor itself has no moving parts, just a fine coil around small metal laminate. This is (or supposed to be) fully encapsulated and sealed in a plastic shell. (Hall effect)
On my first sensor fault you could see how water had ingressed through the plastic moulding causing a fail.
I personally keep away now from vw sensors and have fitted FebiBilstien. I have done 3 now, one for myself (soon to be two when it arrives) and a couple on mates. These only cost around a tenner. I have also been told Bosch are a good alternative.
There are two different types for the Cali, near side and offside.

Hope above explanation helps.
