ACC Hard Late Braking

Hi, generally really like the ACC, but on our Cali there are times when it seems to brake very late (I'm almost always using the 'longest' headway setting) when braking to a stop. I fundamentally don't trust it, so have my foot over the brake in such situations. Is this usual, or does mine need adjustment?

What's happening is progressive ACC braking (vehicle in front) which seems to be 'not quite' strong enough followed by a quick hard brake/almost feels like the wheels have locked and are skidding/sliding a short way (inches) to stop. Many times it works fine and great, but sometimes it just seems slightly slow off the mark and then followed by the jarring hard braking. Is this normal?

TIA.

Perhaps changing the driving mode profile could help? We drive with “ECO” mode all the time now, the braking behaves ok. We haven’t tried the other modes to see if it makes any difference to braking…our van used to default to SPORT and we weren’t keen on that, it was sporty but not our “style”!
