Hi

Newbie here after people's advice please!

Out of the following, which would you buy?

2018 T6 Ocean 39000 miles £49000 at a VW dealer

2013 T5 140 SE manual 55000 miles £35000 FVWSH being sold by a work colleague

Being Euro 5 makes me a bit wary of the T5

Thanks

Wow. I’m more in wonder that used prices remain so strong. T6 for 50K at 7 years old. Those would have only cost 10 - 15 more than that new. Our 6.1 was 68K after discounts in 22.

Go for the one that makes most sense and is in best nick for your needs.

Also use the classifieds here.

Spec will probably be a lot better on the T6, plus Euro 6 150 engine and less chance post 2015 of roof "corrosion". Should also be a decent package or warranty etc from VW dealer.
T5 would be more attractive nearer £30k.

I have the T6 and love it. I've compared it to the T6.1 and like the dashboard much better; however I have not driven T6.1. As for driving the T6 Ocean, it drives like a dream. Fully loaded (i.e. water tank full) I get 35-36 mpg average with the large 204hp engine. Equally, I've never had an issue with the engine...not a warning light, not a mechanical fault, etc. It has been faultless. If you want to know more....just ask. Personally, I'd go for the T6; I think it's the best model VW made.

I had a T6.1 204 4 Motion and never saw over 30mpg on a trip. I averaged 26 mpg over 48,000 miles, so not one to buy for economy. The “new California” is petrol so fully expecting it to be worse, so far haven’t managed over 350 miles from a full tank buy hey ho I didn’t buy it to be frugal.

My 6.1 averages 37mph over 1400 miles, fully loaded or daily driving makes little difference.
Euro 6 means no problem with LEZ or in Europe.
Big price difference may be your deal breaker but if you want great driving experience, economy and worry-free driving in emissions zones then the 6 might tick your boxes.
It really depends what you will use it for and how long you expect to keep it, I guess.

You must have a pretty heavy foot. When careful I typically see 41mpg with about 75% motorway driving. Add a healthy mix of urban and country roads and it drops to 38mpg. I generally travel solo so the weight is certainly helping. Very happy with the fuel consumption on my 204 4Mo.

And I get well over 600 miles from a full tank (extended 80L capacity)

Interestingly I’ve had 41.6 mpg on a 200 mile trip. Same spec

Your location is the key here. We live 15 miles from the edge of the London ULEZ and therefore Euro 6 is a no-brainer if we want to avoid charges. Some other UK cities may be going that way soon and I know various continental cities are doing similar. Your mate's van would have to be very highly specified to warrant that price. It's a 12 year old motor after all.

Both are over priced in my opinion, and the dealer one more so.

The T6 is the sweet spot (for me at least) in terms of Euro 6 and especially if you get one with DSG, the drive is way better than a T5.1 Manual (I’ve owned both)

Personally I’d aim for a 150bhp T6 around £45,000 with reasonable miles and good service history.

To answer your question, considering the 180bhp T5.1 can be problematic and arguably some would say the same for the 204bhp T6 engine with higher miles then if I had to get one I’d go for the 2013 T5.

I reckon you’ll get about 50/50 advice on each.

Personally I wouldn’t consider anything other than an EU6 van now.

We travel in Europe in the summer a lot and quite a few areas now have low emission zones that you will need an EU6 Crit Air sticker for.

You may not be planning driving into London in it or doing much continental travel, but low emission is only going to expand overtime. It’s a long time before T5s reach classic car status.

Hi
Interesting question. We have an 06 t5 174 which I never planned to keep this long! OK so we avoid caz otherwise it's never let us down and keeps on delivering.

The government can change the rules at anytime. It’s likely that they will charge for all diesels in future to push people towards EV’s / Hybrid.

T6 for me, mine is a 2016 204 DSG I've just got back from a 3 month trip to southern Italy it never missed a beat I got over 40 mpg running at 60 mph diesel heater is a must and Euro 6 compliant is also a must for me.

I can't offer a view on the 2013 option but I have a 2018 T6 Ocean. I bought this privately 2 years ago and purchased a 2 year warranty/breakdown/MOT cover from VW. The van was in Europe for 2 months last year and never missed a beat. The price looks a wee bit high but depends on the warranty that the dealer is providing. I get 40mpg regularly, and 50mpg if bveruy careful. A frined with the 4Motion gets 30mpg, but can tow his boat easily.
The T6 is good value for money. A great piece of kit. You won't be disappointed.

I use my 204 4motion as my daily driver and only really get over 30mpg on motorways. However, I do live in the Dales in N Yorkshire

I have just driven 66 miles one way and then returned, rough 70% motorway and some of that with 50mph restriction, quite a lot driven at 70mph. not much town driving though. Outward I got 36mpg return 33mpg 204 4mo 2022 T6.1 Cali ocean.
I think these vans are susceptible to wind direction, something that I had not really noticed with the many estate cars I have owned previously, this isn’t very surprising as they probably aren’t very aerodynamic, bit of a shock really as I could better this in a Golf R estate most of the time unless I was booting it, town driving is terrible mpg figures for both Van and Golf.

Euro 7 emissions regulations are not far away from being implemented. It will include particulate emissions from tyres and brakes

I have a 2012 140 from almost new, 60k mileage. Roof corrosion, particularly around the panel above the windscreen is an ongoing problem, despite main dealer's efforts to fleece me. Electronics / electrical connections now beginning to cause problems with e.g. warning lights for ABS caused by failing sensor etc. Also no EHU fitted. Seems a lot of money for a vehicle of that age.

I get slightly more than 26mpg in an "old California" T6 petrol, so it shouldn't be too bad.

As for the OP, I'd go for the newest. If it's held value so far, it will probably continue to do so seeing as the T7 isn't really a like for like upgrade on a T6.

I’d take the T6 no indecision.
I’m biased because I love my T6 and I need an Euro6 engine
