Hi All,
not sure if anyone aware but been made aware of an Air Bag Recall on models pre 2018.

Strangely, I've spoken to 2 VW Van Centres, who know nothing about it - its not on their system, even checked my VIN, but nothing there, yet it is clearly on their website.
FB posts are all saying the same thing, Centres know nothing about it - yet clearly, its on their website....

Guy in Liverpool is getting it checked out, but as he said, if its not on their system, nothing he can do.

Interested to hear from anyone who knows about this.

Cheers

It is linked to a specific Airbag manufacturer called Takata, this has been around for a few years. It only effects certain Models / Years depending if Takata parts were fitted.

They have known for decades about this problem. The explosive medium in the firing mechanism can degrade (moisture ingress) and cause (when the bag is set off) the container to fracture sending metal fragments in to the vehicle potentially hitting the driver. It is rare but happens.

Breeze didn't say anything to me about it when i was there yesterday (Poole)....

If your vehicle is subject to a recall, then it will also get flagged in the government website, just enter your reg in https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ - "Check for vehicle recalls" section at the bottom, but again this only effects airbags made by Takata

This recall affected dozens of manufacturers who used this vendor - at Nissan we changed hundreds of thousands of these globally. It's quite a well known one and because it is a legal recall every manufacturer must contact any owners of these vehicles for immediate replacement. If a dealer has not said anything to you about it, and you do not have a letter, it's because you are not affected.

Looking at the page source that page was last updated September last year.

My UP! Is affected according to the vw website and a vin check, but not had a letter so do not be complacent check.

But EVERY VW Centre I've spoken to say there is NO RECALL.......no idea what I'm talking about, even though I shared the VW Web page that says otherwise (with my VIN on it).
Computer says NO......

Any letter is legally sent out to the owner on the governemnt database at the time. I don't know your circumstances, but I do know either someone else got your letter, or you were not in the system. OEM's have no way around this for safety recalls.

Computer says you have no recall on your vehicle. Because you don't. Not sure what is the actual issue is.

Checked my T5.1 2010 Cali on the vin site and it came up as worked needed so I phoned my VW dealer in Chelmsford and they confirmed the issue so got it booked in for next Tuesday.
I'll update this post once its been done.

VW: "Important: The list of vehicles will be updated on a regular basis in the future based on our analysis of which vehicles are affected. Please therefore keep checking back to see whether your vehicle is affected."

This is the message I get when I enter my VIN-number. (I am NL and our Cali is a 2011 vehicle)

"Dear Volkswagen customer,
your vehicle with the vehicle identification number (VIN) FIN: number must be checked by the Volkswagen retailer. As a owner or holder of this vehicle, please contact a Volkswagen dealer immediately.
We value your trust in the Volkswagen brand and hope for your continued loyalty.

Yours sincerely, Volkswagen AG
Please contact a Volkswagen Service Partner."

I contacted my dealer here in NL through e-mail. My van is due to go in to them in june. I will let you know what they say when they respond.

Dealer called me today, letting me know that they have no information about this from VW and so they can not do anything about it when the van goes into the workplace. Which I understand, but doesn't feel right.

I suggested they contact VW Netherlands to ask for clarification, but they didn't seem very willing to do so, stating that it's hard for them to get through to VW Netherlands. Which seems strange. "nothing I can do, nothing I can do".

I wonder what would happen (although the chance, I assume is slim) if my airbags were deployed and I die or get injured as a result of the airbag issue,- after having brought this to their attention and them not fixxing it because VW has not told them to do so-.

I mean, wouldn't VW be liable? Are we expected to not drive our Cali's untill VW figures this out? I'm not to worries. Have been driving our Cali for years now. Know the chances are slim, but still it doesn't feel right.

The link you gave was for VW cars.

This is the Commercial link.

UPDATE 28TH MAR:

Thought I'd check my appointment for the airbag recall next week but when I called my dealer they had booked it in for the EGR Recall (which I've refused) NOT the Takata airbag recall and they claimed to know nothing about it as it is not on their ELSA system for recalls so I will have to wait until I received a recall letter from them in the future! They put me through to VW UK who also knew nothing about the airbag recall as it's not showing on their recall system so I gave them the website link for the airbag recall and they entered my VIN and confirmed that my vehicle was effected but I needed to talk to my dealer or await a recall letter/email.

Ever feel like you're going around in circles!
I'll stick a reminder in my Calendar to chase up my dealer every month until I get bored ;)

For reference here is the airbag recall website reply for my VIN...

They are thinking that the longer they wait the less vehicles will be on the road. It may also be difficult to store and transport a large amount of explosive material.

Checked, but nothing to be done. Did have the EGR recall last year done and nothing really bad to report. Looked like the fuel consumption was a bit higher, but then it's hard to tell if that's a fact.
