We're meandering up from Limousin later this week to get the ferry from Dunkirk on Monday. Just wondered if any one has a recommendation for a nice site for our last night? Ideally within walking distance of a pleasant village with bar/restaurant

Thanks in anticipation!

Ian

There are a few good aires on the cost down from Calais. Just drive down the coast road and look out for them.
One virtually on the beach at Cap Griz Nez. Loos open in the day and there's a restuarant there as well.
gets busy so you need to be there in good time.

That's not a real aire de camping car, it's basically the Cap Griz Nez parking. Very crowded, usually. We went from there to Les Erables: a bit more up the cliff, very quiet, views across the channel to the UK.

It is a genuine aire. Only five spaces officially but it was full of campervans/motorhomes when we were there last week. I agree it is crowded though.

The car park at the top of the cliff next to the walks (is that Les Erables) is just a park. There is actually a sign saying no overnight parking but everyone seemed to ignore it. Even though the gendarmes were patrolling they must be OK with it as people definitely stayed overnight. I agree a lot more pleasant spot to spend the night.

Can recommend:
Campsite La Chaumière ***
France - Nord-Pas-de-Calais - North - Buysscheure
... which is quiet, pleasant, has a good restaurant and is very friendly but is quite well hidden in the lanes.

Try Camping au Bord de L'Aisne in Guignicourt. A lovely quiet site with some facilities and a pretty village/small town. We stopped there on our way to Switzerland earlier in the year. It was a bit over 2 hours from Dunkerque. You could also try Camping Le Vivier aux Carpes (can't remember town name), which is a bit nearer the port but not as pleasant.

municipal camp site at Epernay clean and cheap 3 hours to the docks

Thanks all. We stayed at the campsite in Dunkirk suggested by Bart and Marga. Unfortunately our pitch was right in amongst a collection of young people who had a great time but were not too aware of others around them trying to get some sleep. Just bad luck. Lots of other ideas above for future occasions!

See my separate thread on Bruges.

This is the campsite at Epernay, its about 180 miles to Calais or 3 hrs using the autoroute.
