Hi there, I think that I have narrowed down my inoperable heater problem to the fuel pump. No clicking noises detected, though the fan works, the petrol tank is full and the leisure battery fully charged.
Can anyone please offer an idiots guide to locating, removing and reinstalling the auxiliary heater fuel pump (petrol) on my 2014 T5 California?

perhaps the petrol in the tank is the issue !!!
welcome along to the forum you say your van on your details is 2014 so under warranty so I would seek VW advise

Hi and welcome on your first post .
Don't know how far you are in the proces related to your aux.heater but what makes you so sure it is the actual pump thats broken?
There are other treads on people having issues with the aux. heater mostly ending up a electrical problem or a problem with the controlpanel (faulty code that needs a reset)
Lots of existing treads to read on the forum.

For me the aux. heater is one of the things in myself will not go try and fix it myself.
My opinion is to visit a specialist .

If you are looking for the location of the pumps , they are located on the underbody of the verhicle about where the kitchenunit sits .
You only get acces from under the verhicle and have to remove the plastic underbody ( this is a T5 we are talking about)
Some useful pictures here of how the underbody looks like with the plastic covers removed.

Halfway down the first page you can spot the dieselpump(s). of both the aux. heater and the pre-heater for the engine cooling.

:welcome

Petrol you say. Are you absolutely sure. I didn't know there was a Petrol 2014 California.

Have you checked the Control Panel for Diagnostic Codes.

Hold down R lower button and press the control button. Displays a hidden menu. Scroll to Diagnostic Codes. Take a note of any shown and then reset.
Switch Off Control Panel, L lower button. Switch On again and try Heater.

I was questioning the "petrol" thing also but given he say to be from Spain i gave him the benefit of the doubt of a language misunderstanding.
Or he has a converted van?

If it's a UK registered Cali then it may well be under warranty but not all european countries give a 3 year warranty.
In the UK it is 3 years, but that is infact 1 year from Dealership and 2 years from VW. On the Continent I believe it is just 2 years from VW, so may be out of warranty.
These units are very robust and widely used, not just by VW and it would be unusual for a 2 year old unit to have mechanical problems. More likely to be electrical.

Thank you for the comments to date. Our 2014 Cali is an import from Germany, we live in Bilbao, and it is most definitely petrol... The aux heater and its lack of performance has been tested exhaustively by my local VW dealer, the diagnosis being a defective fuel pump. Replacement cost well north of €400. Hence my thought re removal and test, hoping that the metering piston is merely stuck....

Have all look on eBay for a pump. I fitted a few in Mazda Bongos and pumps are about £50.
Not sure where it's located on the Cali but I assume it's underneath somewhere. Should be a direct swap.

Still try to figure out your 2014 Cali beeing petrol .
It must be a conversion? Been enlarging your avatar but unclear to see .

Just make sure you get the correct pump for your model to avoid any problems. A friend purchased the wrong one and burnt his heater out.

Once again thank your the comments, thoughts and advice.
The Toponetta is a 2014 petrol engine powered VW California Comfortline straight off the production line. I imported the vehicle, in Oct 2015, from a German VW dealer who used Topornetta as a demonstrator. The auxiliary heater has never worked. My local VW agent, in Bilbao, ran the all the diagnostics and pronounced that the fuel pump was defective. But VW Spain nor Germany could give a date as to when a replacement pump could be available.
So, I thought if I could find and remove the fuel pump it could be tested.
The hard part, at present, is obtaining advice as to the pumps exact location.....

If it's a conversion it will probally not look like the link i posted above .
I just tryed and google " vw toponetta" no find ?

You need to know the brand of the heather . Webasto or Eberspacher ...? And look for a specialist in parts.

There is a thread containing some nice pictures of the underside of the vehicle with some of the protection covers removed, including the heater pumps - but I can't find it, sorry.

However, I did find this post which indicates where the pumps might be located:

Hope that helps

Edit - sorry again - just noticed that the same information has already been supplied above, together with a link to the thread I was struggling to find!

Thanks to all those who contributed to my query. The answer to the problem - a wiring fault - one of the connections to the heater was not connected - it took a lot of searching to trace this fault. So in summary Welsh Gas was correct - check out the wiring and the fuel supply!
