Hi. There's plenty of discussion on this but I'm going round in circles. I am due to pick up my 2014 Beach on Saturday and am trying to sort out insurance. Comfort came in at £900, esure wouldn't insure it and Caravan & Motorhome Club told me it's on the DVLA records as a motorhome, that they didn't find anyone on the system who would insure it on that basis but will query whether it could go under a car policy. They told me one issue is that it is my main car and a motorhome, so not favoured by insurers.

Aside from any suggestions, should I look to get the vehicle registered as a car with the DVLA? Is that a quick process? By Saturday seems optimistic?

Thanks

Hi - i have a Beach - most of the campervan specialist insurers normally accept the Beach even though it is not strictly a campervan - its an anomaly much covered on this forum. I am with LV because it seems good value and they provide up to three months european / green card cover - so it suits me - and they were reasonably good with a big claim few years back - do your leg work and you will find the right result for you ...... run it through compare the market etc too - cheers

Thanks - will do. So do you know what your Beach is registered as - car or motorhome?

They are All registered as M1 - Diesel Car, Body Type Motor Caravan/Motorhome.

I had my Beach insured with Direct Line and they were cheap. Certainly the same price as my wife's Caddy Maxi Life.

The one thing to watch is that Direct Line wouldn't cover you for fire if cooking inside. With it being a Beach and us planning on cooking outside under the awning, it wasn't an issue.

Definitely check the small print on any policy though :thumb
Thanks. DirectLine come in c£550. Do you think that's the ballpark I'm looking at for single vehicle cover with 9+ years no claims? Cheers

LV here too, pretty cheap to be honest, I can't complain. I do however have max no claims 9+ years.

£188 with LV, post code is the reason for huge difference, probably.

With Direct Line you can negotiate and include specifics to your policy. The biggest thing though is post codes as already mentioned - and where vehicle is parked such as driveway or on street.

What kind of things are relevant if negotiating with them; it will be my only vehicle, I don't use if for commuting, it's parked on the driveway. Anything else I should be pushing? Thanks!

For what it's worth, I just spoke with Admiral, who have my house insurance, and they quoted £375 which feels much better. Also, it's just £81 to take it to the time of my house policy renewal so I can go with that for now. Breakdown cover next!

Look at VW Assistance. £150 or so for 2 yrs. Run by AA with special vehicles or AA out of hours. Very full cover.

I think they must have changed it because our beach is registered as Body type: MPV Tax class: Diesel car

We found Safeguard to give a competitive quote and good cover (with the club discount).

Interesting. So Safeguard didn't query that it wasn't a Motor Caravan on the V5c?

I think you will also find they won't insure the roof, I used to have a car policy with them and tried to get the beach insured which I could but it would not be insured as a campervan and they would not repair any damage to the roof in a claim.

Not so. I have an Ocean with DL and the written policy covers all factory fittings and my leather seats were also included. I think it all depends on not just who you speak with but also the underwriter. The person we dealt with was fully conversant with the Ocean but maybe not the Beach.

Aviva will insure a beach but not on ocean

No they didn't mention the V5 specifically but I did point out that the Beach is the one without the kitchen and is it definitely ok for them to insure it. They were very reassuring and said this comes up all the time but yes they definitely insure the Beach....so hopefully my insurance isn't null and void?! :Nailbiting

I would check because up until now the Beach has been registered as a Motor Caravan, a bone of contention as you may be aware, and some firms will only insure these types of vehicles.

We use caravan guard for our insurance - found that they had good extras included for valuables etc as they are normally insuring caravans and motor homes.

We have a beach and everything was simple to do .

I'm with LV - very competitively priced
Used to use directline for my car but the price kept going up year on year and LV is half that cost

I went to Direct line with a brand new California the classed it as a caravanete
Was cheaper to cover than my Tiguan
