Insurance help from 2019 Cali owners

That’s funny I didn’t have a problem... It’s part of a multi car insurance...
So I then tried to do it without the reg and Transporter and not California is the only option. So it looks like they are offering Van insurance as the Campervan for the converted market.

So if they don't actually understand the vehicle, can you trust them when you need to make a claim.

Interested to see what your reg throws up if you try a van quote?

They insured ours a VW California....we made sure it was good when we renewed the policy in March. It was a good price and insured the Mini Cooper at the same time...I have had problems getting quoted on their website so just phone them....

Campervan insurance isn't a problem if V5c says it's a 'Motorcaravan', (Pre MY19) the problem begins with some MY19's and future new California Oceans (not sure about Beach) when DVAL changed it's body type from 'Motorcaravan' to MPV. You may find you have difficulty getting specialist campervan insurance and benefits and possibility (from what I have read) on being allowed to camp on some sites (poss there site insurence etc)

Sure I can get a quote but the Cali just shows up as a car and can be added with our Mini Cooper as a multi car.

I can’t see campsites or insurance companies asking to see your V5 just to see the actual wording.I can’t remember any insurance company asking me the wording on the V5. I’m sure it’s not going to make any difference and wouldn’t worry about it too much....

Of course they don't ask what it says on you V5c, why would they, they just want your money. When you make a claim be sure they won't pay out until they have looked at every which way they can to worm out of honoring your claim. Most MY19's and from now on will mainly only be insured as "MPV's and not campervans. For me not being Insured as a campervan (which is what an Ocean is) concerns me try claiming on an MPV insurance when you have camping equipment issues e.g. pop-up, furniture, water, gas etc. The Ocean is sold as a campervan but DVAL class it as an MPV.

I would say that if you are concerned regarding the Change of wording by the DVLA that you actually contact then to find out why it has been changed...It’s almost certainly to do with screwing more money out of you in some way or another.. My son in laws sister works in the DVLA in Swansea so when I see her next I will ask her if she can find out....Don’t hold you breath for an answer that will benefit you...

I have written to them to ask for an explanation e.g. to get more tax and poss to help Police to identify vehicles more easily

We have looked into it. It appears that all campervans/ motorhomes up to 3500kg are now, since June being classified as either MPV or window van body type. It appears related to a significant change in the tax regime being applied to second stage converted vans, which are now being taxed as cars, as they have to declare their CO2 levels from September.

Some specialist motorhome insurance underwriters are now refusing to cover California’s as campervans unless they have the motor caravan body type specified on the V5.

Nothing surprises me anymore....It has to be about money....

I’ve just gone with Admiral multicar, cheaper for all 3 cars including my newly purchased ‘18 plate Ocean than it was for just my original two.

Will be interested to know if it’s not valid then if anyone finds out. Don’t want to open a can of worms by asking them!

Maybe I’ll read the small print and post any findings here!

Has anyone found insurance that includes driving another vehicle and also use for work. My Cali is my car and although I have retired from full time employment, I sometimes have the opportunity for working occasional days at different locations. I also do some voluntary work but thr idea that the Cali is not simply a holiday vehicle seems too much for the insurers to understand. Thanks.

I'm with Comfort, business use and can drive other vehicles but limited mileage. Where in Huddersfield are you (not exactly) I lived on the edge of Milnsbridge and Golcar for 18 years and worked on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Birchencliffe. Admiral have quoted for business use but from the thread they don't cover some of the essentials for a camper van and its expensive.

Just looked and our March 2019 registered California Ocean also says MPV

The registration seems to be a lottery dependent on the information supplied by the individual dealers.
Our June 2019 beach says Motor Caravan :)

Beach seemed to be, and Oceans don't. Its almost like the DVLA asked an expert at VW o_O

Our new Ocean is registered as an MPV. Just got a quote from Safeguard and they are aware of the change that they are now classed as MPVs and said it is fine, that they cover them.

Did you mean 'Safeguard', as I cant find an insurance company called Sureguard?

I've just had an interesting conversation with Admiral that others might want to be aware of.

I rang to see what they could offer us to add the Cali on with a multi-car discount, as our car is currently insured with them. I was quoted £49.22 to add it on until the end of Jan when both the Cali and the our car would require renewal together.

I asked some quite specific questions about any exclusions (I used to work in insurance!) and they actually came back and said that they couldn't cover it after all, but five minutes previously to me asking those questions, they were all set to take my card details!

I asked what would happen to all those California Ocean owners who had insured with them already and he said it would depend on what the vehicle had inside it, in terms of plumbing and cooking facilities if it came to a claim. Upon explaining that that all California Oceans had these facilities built in from factory he went off to speak to someone and then blamed the DVLA for providing them with information stating that the Ocean is a car. He then repeated that Admiral DO NOT provide cover for Motor Caravans/Campervans/Motor Homes under any circumstances.

I have asked that Admiral have now escalate this internally. I also mentioned this forum and told them I will put a warning on there for existing Admiral customers as they have will have inevitably purchased policies on false pretences. I guess they would need to honour any claims made for existing customers, and it could be a drawn out, unecessary process for many if they decide not to pay out as campervans are excluded. I will not be following this up, but I felt I should make you all aware.

4 years ago we had a no fault accident. Someone pulled out of a T-junction, on our left/nearside, and took the front of the car off. We were insured by Admiral.

Admiral immediately tried to palm off us to an "accident management company" who were extremely aggressive in trying to get us into a new hire car at circa £200 per day. We ignored that. Fortunately the third-party insurers (Royal Sun Alliance) were superb. They took responsibility, admitted fault and resolved everything. Admiral were horrendous. As it was no fault, and our car was written off, we had to cancel our Admiral insurance mid-term. Admiral deducted a £50 admin fee, from our remaining policy, for cancelling our insurance! Never, never will I insure a vehicle again with Admiral.
