Beware the Umleitungs

Just back from a 5 week tour around Germany and amazed at the amount of work being carried out on the road network there.
As we like to travel off the autobahns, so that we can visit the towns on route, we came across quite a few umleitungs (diversions) due to road closures, some on quite major routes. Most times it meant just long diversions up to 6 or 7 miles around the closure. In two cases the roads were so narrow we witnessed the after effect of large articulated wagons meeting other vehicles on tight bends, not pretty sights for the smaller vehicles.
Once we were deposited in the middle of nowhere (could have ben my fault for not following the signs correctly) only to get back to where we started. There was also a major one around Meersburg, on the Bodensee. Luckily we were travelling north, southbound was nose to tail for the whole diversion (about 7 miles).
Keep a keen eye on the road signs, it is easy to miss you are about to come to a dead end.
