Any reccomendations for a bike for taking with us to France in the summer. We have road bikes at home for us and the kids so want something fairly inexpensive that doesn't look worth nicking and that will enjoy being used to grab shopping/ explore the area. Are decathlon bike any good? Any other suggestions?

What kind of road bikes do you have? Are they racing bikes? Because if not, I would take the bikes you already own.
In my opinion, a bike trip doesn't get better than the bike you're riding :)

And, most bikes will take you pretty much anywhere. Unless you're hitting the single tracks

Edit: now I didn't miss the fact that you don't want them stolen, but invest in 2-3 good locks instead I'd say

Most Decathlon bikes are really okay, actually. But you know what, instead of buying them over here and taking them with you, why not buy them in France? Just pop into any large Decathlon store.

You could just not take a bike across with you and buy one from any of the larger Supermarkets. They do reasonable hybrid type ones. Bring it back & sell it if not needed.

Alternatively look on the Internet secondhand selling sites or your local bike dealer may have a suitable trade in.

All great suggestions, thank you. Reason for not taking our decent bikes is to avoid the security worry - want to relax and just leave them around with a simple lock. We will not be going far, only pottering. Decathlon France it is.

I wouldn't worry too much about security, just lock them up and you'll be fine. Loads of people have bikes with them most don't seem to bother making them very secure.

Plenty of cheap second hand bikes on eBay, better taking them than your pride and joy IMO. We talked to a family on holiday in Annecy last summer, 3 brand new bikes stolen from a very public place with locks on, kinda spoilt there hols.
