Hi everyone,my name is richard.
I'm looking at purchasing a used van from ex rental firm.
Have seen a 17 plate ocean for 42k including vat.
Just wondered what the pros and cons are please.
Van has covered approx 34000 miles.
Cheers

Welcome Richard
Did you already see the van? I guess warranty is still okay (3 years?).
I hope it is in mint condition and no service was missed?

Cheers

Generally just like any other used vehicle purchase really, you need it to have been well looked after and everything needs to work.

Sometimes nice with 2nd hand to hope that someone else has sorted out any initial niggles.

Higher mileage vehicle could scare off any future resale, but wouldn't bother most I would hope/expect...

Get a vcds diagnostics scan done on the vehicle. this will show any recorded errors and faults. Make sure you have printed documentation to show servicing completed. Being ex rental may mean that the van has been abused, so check over things like tyres, bodywork, internal fittings, functioning of equipment.

Remember to check the habitation equipment throughly.
Might be worth having a good poke round a new one at your local dealership to understand how it all works

Welcome on board , that seems pretty low milage for a rental but i guess good for you ...

We bought an ex rental which was 3 years old. It had done 64k miles in that time and was out of warranty too. The price was right for us.

I spent some time fixing little things like the odd screw missing from hinges, re-fixing the trim round the bottom of the drivers seat, replacing the Tambor door on the rear cupboard to name a few, plus there was small signs of wear and tear such as scratches on the cupboards on the front bumper (still there) and on one of the window blinds. Nothing major and to be expected when the vehicle is not a personal property.

The main problem I had was that one of the services had been done by a VW specialist and not a VWCV dealer. Consequently when I had a major problem later, VWUK had no 'good will' available.

So my point is check the van over thoroughly physically but also the service book stamps.
Have your eyes open and be prepared to walk away if you have any doubts. There will ways be another Cali round the corner.

As the one you are looking at is a 2017 the condition should be good, but I would be concerned as the mileage at 34000 miles is very high for a year and a bit old van, even for a rental one.

There was a Red one on auto trader 42995. Said private sale but in the pics there were some camper hire rental stickers in the windows. I thought it was a good price for a t6 ocean and I personally wouldn't worry too much. Camper van and elastic sell used rentals at 55k. I wonder if we are talking about the same van?. I was dubious but the price is good so who knows. If its not ripped apart could be a bargain. Good luck. Keep us posted

Not the same one, these vans are through a campervan hire firm easicampers.
They are based in Blackburn and wigan, they seem quite genuine, they are advertising under motorhomes on auto trader and have a red 17 plate on for 42k,then follow the link.

Looks good to me, but as above you've got to get hands on with it and touch/play/try everything...

If the only issue is a broken bracket...a missing screw....or a few scuffs then these can easily (and fairly cheaply) be replaced.

But if there are engine or gearbox or mechanical issues, then it will be costly to repair or replace.

So as I said before, make sure that you get a full vcds scan completed before you hand over any money.

If the rental seller is legitimate, then he will understand why you ask to complete this vcds scan.

Hi Richard

Your link to the vehicle has disappeared!

Questions I would consider:

The purchase price is a significant investment and needs to be right for you to avoid making a costly mistake further down the line.

Is the Ticket price above the price A VW dealer would give the hire company for a trade in against a new Cali? use this to your advantage. (Otherwise it would be on a dealer forecourt)
Would a dealer want a relatively high mile vehicle on its books.? (Perceived high miles for a dealer forecourt)

In reality the mileage should not be an issue regarding mechanical wear and tear, as long as it’s been serviced as VW schedule and the balance of the factory 3 year warranty is still valid? Does the vehicle have an extended. 5 year warranty?

Remember that hire companies will have a good sales record with VW dealership somewhere, and are likely able to get significant discount and VAT rebate against vehicles used for its business, why was the vehicle not traded in with a dealer against a new replacement ?

The hire company will have a margin of profit built into the second hand sales price and are able to take some depreciation cost into account for tax purposes when disposing of an asset.

Vehicle sales are slow at mo. (Confirmed by dealer)

Use we buy any car to check out the current trade In value / speak to dealer regarding trade in price based on that specific vehicle / mileage etc. Remember to make any allowances in the we buy price for any damage / wear etc that you cannot describe on the website. (This will not be reflected in the we buy any car tinternet price and should be deducted appropriately from the sales price)

Is the hire company happy to Allow an independent vehicle inspection to be carried out by a reputable company whom are able to test for paint irregularities on the vehicle (potential panel repairs) as well as mechanical ?

VCDS check (same as above posts)

Considered the annual mileage you are likely to do and the effect this will have at the end of your ownership, if you do low miles that may balance the relatively high miles (perceived) for a 2017 van over say a three year period, conversely if your going to do high miles that would affect the resale of the van when you come to sell !

Being a 2017 model it will not have a service book, service book has been replaced by electronic records, you need to satisfy yourself that all services have been carried out via main dealer otherwise the remaining warranty may be an issue if a future claim is needed, any VW commercial dealer will be able to give you a print out of the service history on that vehicle (that’s what VW advise during their sales patter) this would be another reason why a dealer may not want to take the Cali in part Ex. If the history was incomplete or the service schedule has not been followed to the letter.

When is the next service due and what need to be done to meet your expectations ? (Cost)

Go look at the vehicle, look at everything critically with a view to cost / depreciation: general condition, damage / potential issues, wear and tear, minor scratches, cost of the rectification value (if any) parts and labour (Vw dealer again).

Negotiate hard

Make an informed decision based on the facts and the potential issues that may occur during you ownership vs the comfort of the remaining vw factory warranty (if still valid)

Ultimately no one here can give you a cover all, do your reasearch and be sceptical until proven otherwise by fact. (Assume worst case) and make an informed decision. There are plenty of Calis out there, make your purchase the right one for you.

Ask the hire company to rectify any issues via a VW dealer, no matter how small, (if they are important to you) get any agreement in writing and make the items subject to the sale.

Good luck with your reasearch and report back.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful comments, after a lot of thought,we are going down the pre reg route.
Just wondered if cruise control was something you could live without?
What options are a must etc

I have cruise control, and perhaps used it once in 4 months of ocean ownership.

I only have standard and not Adaptive Cruise Control, which perhaps is better in some ways?

Assuming the T6 is similar to the T5 and T5.1 variants, then Cruise Control can always be added at a later date.

Would I chose to pay to have Cruise Control? Probably not.

My ocean came with the front and rear parking sensors, I have just installed the VW OEM rear view camera.

I am very impressed with this camera, and it has gotten me out of a very tight blind parking lot at night with no street lights. Without it I would have struggled!

I am also just about to install a blind spot warning system (not OEM, but of a similar spec and capability)....this is more about giving my wife some extra aids so that she feels more comfortable driving the van.

We have cruise of both of our vehicles and I love it. Wouldn't be without it.
My wife, on the other hand does not like being out of control.

Horses for courses.

Alan
