I’m about to push the button on a 4 Motion and thought id ask some questions first before I make my decesion.

1) What are the added costs of having the dog 4 motion?
2) Any thing I should be wary of?
3) what extras has people bought after the delivery?

Assuming dog is autocorrected DSG:

1) Weight and reduced load carrying capacity. Fuel consumption. 31.5mpg over 35,000 miles from our 199 4M DSG. DSG Oil change every 4 years, Haldex similar. On the plus side, even tyre wear all round.
2) The DSG from the factory has a poor response from stationary, especially noticeable from stand still at a roundabout - extensively discussed on here. Also it's a wild ride reversing up hill on to a sloping drive for example (until you get used to it). Both issues can be solved by:
3) The TVS gearbox software update, which is quite transformational in many respects. Makes a very good gearbox excellent, in my view. About £450. Well worth it.

It's a lovely drive. Very surefooted, no wheel spin from a powerful engine when lightly loaded. More capable off-road than you might imagine. If it also has adaptive cruise control, that makes long journeys even easier. I use it all the time in many situations.

You will enjoy the van very much. Great vehicle.

Well done if it’s my van then you have purchased an absolute belter. Very reluctant sale it’s been impeccable and personally better built than the t6.1

I have been following various threads on here about the DSG box software updates available. My concern is that every time I visit VW for a service, they run their diagnostics through the van to see if any updates are available. This disables my rear view camera (even though VW OEM) that was installed after the factory build.

Will having my DSG box software updated mean that VW will disable this update too?

This is the only thing that stops me getting it done as the start hesitation, continual gear changes and reversing nuances really irritate me.

Can anyone who has had the update settle my concerns please?

It is not a VW update, but a 3rd party reprogramming.

No, Just tell VW that you have had the DSG remapped and not to run any software update on the the DSG. Its also worth sticking a note on the OBD port in case the service technician isn't passed the info.

+ if your van is still under warranty, it best to wait until this has expired before having the remap carried out .+

I have taken the view that mine’s not going to a VW dealer if I can possibly help it. Except Camper Centrum in the Netherlands when I am over there.

Interestingly they, as perhaps the most expert VW franchised dealer anywhere, offer gearbox software updates and engine performance updates with no effect on warranties.

I feel quite confident VW Commercials in the UK will take no such view.

And, the place I had my TVS remap done will roll back the software to the previous version (they apparently store your vehicle’s specifics) for you to take it to a dealer (if you must) and then reinstall it for you afterwards. IIRC £50 for this service, but not certain. Hope never to use it.

I have found the TVS to be a very positive upgrade.
