California flywheel

Hi, we have 14 California Beach and have been told the flywheel needs replacing, she has only done 38k. Anyone else had this problem?
 
Welcome allong , can't help with advice on your flywheel doh , if my VW dealer says so i belive him ....

Certainly not a common problem but also not unknown.
The T5 flywheel is NOT a solid flywheel but a DMF, Dual Mass Flywheel.

Normally a faulty DMF would be picked up during the 3 year warranty period, but not on a California unless it is used as an everyday vehicle. Remember, it is based on a commercial vehicle which tend to have a higher annual milage than most Californias.

Unfortunately you are unlikely to get any help from VW unless you can prove the unit is faulty and not failing due to driving techniques as you are outside the warranty period.
 
I had this on my original T5 conversion. Ended up doing the clutch at the same time - I think this is usually advised - although this had done about 80k miles
 
As WG says, it's not that uncommon on the T4, T5 and T6 apparently, there's a lot on the Transporter forums about it. If you have symptoms of the DMF giving up, best to get it replaced without delay as you could put a big hole in your gearbox casing if it fails with a bang.
