Campervan VED Increases

Sorry, but anyone who can afford to purchase a new vehicle over 40k, should be willing to pay more in taxation.

I don’t disagree with you Wondering Star, but I’d prefer to know this end of any purchase.

Thank you all for your inputs.

Chris.

Agree with you Chris, was a shock when we purchased last May.
Already saving up, it's a lot of money, but there's nothing cheap about buying a California.
No bargains from the Tax man or the VW option list!

Cars and some motorhomes registered on or after 1 April 2017

Currently £465 from year 2 to year 6 (inclusive)

Vehicles with a list price of more than £40,000
You have to pay an extra £320 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000.

You only have to pay this rate for 5 years (from the second time the vehicle is taxed).

Check the list price with your dealer so you know how much vehicle tax you’ll have to pay.

Then £145 in year 7 onwards at current rates.

Well it‘s difficult to understand the rationale of treating a Campervan the same as a sport car or big SUV.
Although using the Cali as a first of second car, you end up polluting more on those journeys you would have otherwised driven a normal, less polluting car.
I remain a big fan of CO2 tax certificates.
A Camper conversion using a N1 Commercial Vehicle DVLA classification has certain lower speed limits, higher tolls and restrictions on some routes eg: Rotherhyde Tunnel, I believe.
The California, registered as a M1 Diesel car does not have these disadvantages.

I‘m sorry I’m not impressed with your professed environmental concerns. Producing a vehicle has a significant environmental impact. Producing a second vehicle while the first lies idle waiting for the good weather probably means you have a higher overall environmental footprint than just using the California as your only vehicle.:thumb

That's a fair counter. I suppose it depends on your yearly mileage and the environmental cost of the other vehicle at production. If we look at CO2 only one could break even after a couple of years.
Not my case as my other vehicle pollutes similarly to the Cali, so I am definitely a bad example in this context. I've found Carbon Credits were a somehow a fair way to tax people according to what they actually pollute.

Ok...very confused here, sorry.
What is the VED for a second hand 2017 VW California Ocean, 204ps, valued above £40k.

Chris.
I think it is from 1 April 2017 that the new charges were applied. The Govenment website is quite clear, type in your plate number and it will tell you
