I was wondering what camping lanterns people are using. Especially wondering if the wind up jobs are any good. Any recommendations because I need to replace the " night sun" I bought from China. I'm afraid it didn't meet with my expectations☹️

I've got a couple of smaller wind-up torches which have been fine. I tried a larger wind-up lantern once for camping and the winder broke the first time we used it :( . I'm sure there are better ones out there nowadays - especially the LED versions. We still use a couple of 12V fluorescent lamps that we've had for years. Yes - they need to be cabled back to the van but they come with a long lead and we're generally using them in the awning. When they eventually give up I'll change for LED versions - but probabaly still plug-in.

We have Bushnell Rubicon.

We use a luminoodle USB led strip on a power pack. Can be coiled up and put in bag as a lantern. Really bright

I am proud to say that my Coleman collapsible lantern is not available now as I have had it about twenty years so giving long service.

I bought some new hanging led units from Aldi that are brilliant. About £9 for the pair but so useful, I even cooked with one fastened to my coat zip so I could see the food I was cooking in the pitch dark.

We have this rugged, waterproof, lockable coleman lantern:

But if I was buying again I would go for the Coleman LED Quad as it's 4 in 1 design is great:

Dear all many thanks for your replies. I went with the bushnell rubicon in the end because its compact and I just like the look of it. Very shallow but should do the job. Thanks again

I made a lantern or rather, table lamp, using a USB-rechargeable Lezyne bike light with a cut-down plastic milk bottle over it as a diffuser. Bright & easily rechargeable.

I have a Coleman petrol lantern (one of these mines an older one), not used it with the California but have used it in the past while tent camping. Great for sitting around and chatting, it puts out lots of light and lots of heat to.

Using these and they are insanely practical.
Can walk with them, different levels of light. Lowest can hold like 48 hours.
We just stick it to a water canister that works as a light diffuser outside.

No light at all...
I do have a Coleman pressurised kerosene lantern and I like the old fashined hissing noise it makes but I almost never use it on holidays. And I very much don't like the 'ambiance' of most LED lights.
For what it's worth: you will see a lot more in the surrounding without extra light and you are not all too visible too.
