Hi. My first camper van, 2020 California Coast was delivered today (I am very excited) and I need to get a gas bottle for it. The man who delivered it suggested getting LPG rather than campingaz as you refill the bottle at a petrol station rather than swap them.
Advice on this would be very welcome
Richard

Traditional Calor LPG bottles must be swapped at a supplier rather than refilled. There are refillable bottles such as Gaslow (and others) which can be refilled with LPG. If you intend travelling in europe then refillable is the way to go. I wouldn't bother using Campingaz.

You will need a 907 camping gaz bottle to fit in the space provided unless you get a retro fit gaz tank for under the van.

The VW California was built to use the Camping 907 or smaller 904. Anything else is a compromise. Unlike the Grand California which can be specced with gas heating the California only uses gas for cooking. Campingaz is freely available in mainland Europe less so in Scandinavia.

:welcome
As others have said, a 907 or 904 Campingaz bottle is what you need..
Hi from another Hastings California :cheers

If you go down the 904 / 907 route (I'd suggest 907), it might be better to get an empty bottle first from eBay, Freecycle, Gumtree etc as it will be cheaper than paying the deposit on a full new one.

If you are lucky, you might find some at the local recycling centre for free, although bear in mind that taking stuff from there is usually not allowed ;)

In terms of where you get the full ones, Go Outdoors normally have them, my local B&Q does sometimes as well (was sent there once when Go Outdoors were out). You might also find people selling them for local pickup on eBay although obviously risking having to guess how full or not they might be. This guide might help.

Depending on how much cooking you do, a 907 that is designed to fit in the gas locker can last months if not years. It's only used for the hob, all heating is fuelled by diesel. As others have said, ebay or your local tip for an empty bottle & then exchange it for a full one.

If you travel a lot to mainland Europe, it might be worth stopping in France or Spain in a supermarket. They usually sell full bottles or refills for much cheaper than for example Belgium or the UK.
Buy an empty bottle, go to France, and exchange the empty bottle for a refilled one. You will have a refill for less than €30.

Thank you. Europe will be next year so we’ll start out with Campingaz and see how we go

we found that when you needed to replace the empty bottle you end up searching around we were always in the wrong place to find a full one .so our answer was to get an under slung gas bottle and fill up when needed at a petrol station with LPG there are loads in europe.Plus the gas is much cheaper than camping gaz .
