Looking to buy
Had a lucky escape driving away from the York rowntree campsite ,followed the road along the river to get back into York and drove under what looked like a very high bridge! alas not high enough we managed to hit the bridge guard luckily it swung back and no damage was caused just fresh pants required!
let’s be careful out there

What were you driving? your profile says "looking to buy"

Was it this bridge? IMG_5645.jpeg

Yup
driving man Sven hedin
totally my fault not paying attention,it’s a good job it’s got a good margine of error built in or we would have lost the awning and skylights

If you were in a GC600 it would have been the whole upstairs bed gone!

So does the sign mean it's 8' 6" to the top of the arch?

No, 8'6" to the bottom of the barrier, which looking at it, is just slightly less than the height of the arch in line with kerb at the edge of the road.

8’6” Max vehicle height provided you are within the white lines on the road below.

Sometimes catches drivers of rail replacement buses out…if they are used to driving single deckers. This bridge is just up the road from us…

That was a lucky escape. The "standard" sven hedin height seems to be 8'4" but with your off-road wheels, it may have just increased it close to 8'6" or more ?

Do you know the true height of your van loaded/unloaded?

I would be tempted to put a height sticker somewhere visible to you when driving, like the trucks/buses do so that it's always in your area of vision and hence enabling a quick decision when you see a height barrier.

All is well that ends well ...

A commercial vehicle SatNav that can be programmed with height, width and weight could be useful.

Always wondered how they built those open top tour buses - so, just a regular one that was previously used as a rail replacement service ... :Iamsorry

I've got a high roof TGE and a T6 with a Reimo high roof (+ solar) and have always assumed to err on the side of safety that both are only just under 3m.
