I’m on a long trip up north and my tailgate sensor has failed. The warning comes on nonstop on the motorway and it’s clearly knackered as the door shuts fine on the motor. Can I disable it somehow as I won’t get to a garage to fix it for ages?

Interestingly my T5 and T6 has not got a warning sensor on the tailgate - just an open door picture on the van outline on the dash. the times I have driven off with an open tailgate due to this I have lost count over the years.

It’s that picture on the MFD that’s pissing me off!

a good dose of WD40 into the tailgate latch? - that may take care of the issue. Worth trying. This cold weather has disturbed electrics and all in many vehicles over the last few days.

It’s had 3 slams Il try the oil

Now the alarm is going off randomly when locked. I really need a way to disable this sensor if anyone can help?

Argggg. Catch was frozen solid. Managed to open rear door and now it won't latch when shutting it. I hear the motor run several times but door stays unlocked

WD40. the best solution - if it is was frozen. It is the presence of water which freezes that causes the issues.

Before it burns out the motor, apply some heat with a hair dryer (borrow from wife without them knowing about it) to melt any frozen water/loosen the mechanism, then spray WD40.

BTW, if not aware - WD stands for Water Displacer ;)

Turns out the catch spring was broken. A huge thanks to SLVW in Coventry who managed a temporary fix so the door is now locked. Listers the main dealer were useless, could not help, offer advice or recommend another mechanic.

The story ends badly, very badly

The temporary fix was too good and my VW garage down in Devon could not get the catch unlocked. The only way to get to it was through the rear trim which includes the plastic panel and the chair holders. These now need to be replaced at HUUGEE expense.

Look after your rear door catches people.

Oh no! That does not sound good at all.
