Hi Folks,

Almost there on a purchase on my first VW California. I have been online and spoken to a few brokers and insurance seems remarkably cheap. Almost 1/2 the price of my current Range Rover Sport insurance. Am i missing something? Do I need 'special' insurance to make sure I am fully covered?

Thanks in advance!

Just check your Insurance company knows exactly what the vehicle is and will cover the habitation area and all the camping equipment you will end up carrying.
Caravan Club, Camping & Caravan Club, Comfort and some others specialise in Campers and Motorhomes so do know.
Caravan Club include 2 years GAP insurance on new vehicles.

But if you need business use it gets a bit trickier / expensive. The bargain price stems from them thinking it's for high days and holidays, vs your RR Sport which they imagine will be duelling in city traffic every day.

Hi - i am an insurance broker but cant beat the LV rate i have found on compare the market. the vehicle is correctly listed and there are a number of insurers who (rightly) view California owners as steady eddies. if you are buying a Beach just ensure they know how many seats you have, as most will show it as a 5 seater. however, they do not charge any more for the 6th or 7th seat. i will try safeguard via VWCC when the renewal is due.

PS - mine is insured for business use in addition to commuting - again, no additional cost.

I added business use... no extra cost.

You only need to do the maths. £55k vehicle, reasonably targetable by thieves, carrying gas cylinder, naked flames often used inside. Why would that cost 1/4 of the cost of a comparable vehicle if the insurer didn't think it was only used a 1/4 of the miles / time of a comparable vehicle?
