We are settinmg off for a 3 week round trip to Carcassonne at the weekend. Our dog has a European Passport. Do we need any other documentation for her to leave the UK and enter France?

This is what ChatGPT says:

If the EU pet passport was issued in an EU country (not the UK) and is still valid, then your dog can travel to France under EU rules, which is generally much easier than if the dog only had a UK-issued passport. Here's what you need to consider:

1. EU Pet Passport Validity

  • Make sure the passport was issued in the EU (e.g., France, Spain, etc.) and not in the UK after Brexit—UK-issued passports are no longer valid for travel to the EU.
  • Check that all relevant sections are filled in correctly: rabies vaccination details, microchip info, etc.
2. Rabies Vaccination
  • Your dog must be microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccination.
  • The vaccine must have been given at least 21 days before travel (if it’s a new vaccination).
  • The rabies jab must still be in date.
3. Tapeworm Treatment (Echinococcus) – Not required for entry to France
  • France does not require tapeworm treatment before entry.
  • BUT: You'll need to get it before returning to the UK (between 24 and 120 hours before re-entry).
4. Transport
  • If you’re travelling by car via ferry or Eurotunnel, make sure your carrier is an approved route for pet travel.
  • Check if you need to pre-register your dog with the transport company (some require this).

Coming back to the UK:

  • You’ll need either:
    • A valid EU pet passport, or
    • An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued in the UK within 10 days of travel
But since your dog has an EU passport, you're all good as long as it's up to date.
Don't forget the tapeworm treatment, though — it’s a must for re-entry into the UK.

My wife's dog has an EU passport and I have been driving him to the EU and back for many years, before and after Brexit.
The UK pet passport is now worthless but with an EU pet passport, Brexit brought no change.

just remember to go to a vet to get the antiworm pill and stamp the passport 24-120hrs before crossing back.

If that's the case then the EU Pet Passport should be made illegal for Pets domiciled in the UK.
