I'm hoping to get a 180 DSG (or maybe manual if I feel unable to tie that left leg down reaching for the non-existent clutch.

Anyway, it comes with Thunder alloys at 17", but someone told me the smaller the wheel, the smoother the drive  . I want a smooth ride, so do you think I should see if they will let me have a 16" instead?

The 17 inch thunders are fine & you will not fit 16 inch wheels on a 180 due to the bigger brake calipers :thumb

Its more to do with the tyre profile than the wheel size larger wheels with a lower profile tyre will give a harder ride the 17 inch thunders with standard tyres give a great balance :thumb

As mentioned, the 180 has big brakes; it needs 17s to clear the disks.
The ride is very good; I've done 620 miles in a day in ours with no issues. The tyres are 55 profile so plenty "chunky" enough for comfort.
