Just out for a drive, felt a slight hesitation while driving along and then in the instrumentation panel the ‘D’ & the gear indicator started flashing, box does not want to go above gear 3.

Also the Catalytic Converter light is also on.

Any ideas please ?

Sounds like you need a regen, hence why it may be capping your max speed. Ironically the best way to do a regen used to be/is to heat the engine right up to burn the soot off.

Not heard of this before per se, but I think you need to get some Diagnostics to find out if this is a Primary DSG problem or Engine.

Does the engine rev freely or is it sluggish? The DSG may be " capped " in its function due to an engine problem, possibly related to DPF.

How many miles has the engine done?

Believe it would go into limp mode to restrict power / RPM, but you should still get the gear range but with less rev's available..

..Or at least thats what our Freelander used to do when various sensors threw a wobbly.

Try to get hold of a diagnostic scanner thet allows you to clear the codes, and see if the problem clears. Hopefully its just a sensor of some kind.

WG, engine has now done about 30K since it’s renewal in 2016. Revs freely.

RAC waiting time was many many hours so I just drove it the 20 miles from Llangorse Lake to Abergavenny. On ‘D’ it goes from 1st to 3rd gear and as I said earlier will not engage reverse gear. Drove at 35mph on the way home.

Did they change the DPF when the engine was changed?

A DSG gearbox is effectively two gearboxes. One responsible for 1,3,5,7 and the other for 2,4,6 and perhaps reverse.

It sounds like your vehicle may be avoiding one of the boxes.

Yes, and I have a ‘D’ EGR…..

RAC coming tomorrow so I hope they will read & report on the error codes.

New mechatronic unit I’m guessing? It’s probably fixable but unless you find a specialist happy to strip it/diagnose it then it’ll probably be just swap it out.

££££££ :shocked

What is the mechatronic unit, what part of the DSG is that ?

And £££ ?

I know it’s a bit late but what about shifting right and seeing if the dsg will change gear sequentially by moving the box up and down manually.
If it won’t then would suggest that one of the clutches is not playing ball, denying access to 2nd. I would then assume that as the box is sequential missing 2nd would mean that 3rd was the final option, as 4th could not be pre engaged ready for change up from 3rd from the other gear cluster as 2nd gear was being denied due to the clutch problem?

Any alternative views welcome

You can reset the DSG clutch bite point / reset the learning function by:

turn ignition on (do not start the van)
press the accelerator full down & hold for 20 seconds
the gearbox may make a noise
you feel a click through the accelerator pedal.
Start the van and drive normally.

may be worth a try ?

Thanks for all responses.

RAC been out and checked error codes, shows a defect in the Mechatronics Control Unit. The reason why the Cat warning light will be on is because the gearbox does not have its own warning light, and is likely wired to the Cat light.

Think I now need to decide to go down the independent garage route who could send the unit off to a specialist refurb place and then refit OR go straight to a main dealer.

How unlucky am I, new engine in the past and now this.

Forgive me for interrupting your thread but your reported issues sound exactly like the ones my DSG suffered.
In short, I managed to ‘reset’ the box a couple of times. Warning lights went off, D light stopped flashing and drove in auto and manual. Then all errors repeated with no even number gears and no reverse. I took to independent Auto Gearbox garage who said diagnostics suggested electronic fault ie Mechatron or whatever but had similar issues which replacement unit didn’t resolve and was unable to reset error code. He asked permission to take out and open up and gearbox was trashed with loads of broken parts inside.
I am now waiting for a replacement refurb box from Europe. A tad pricey. 12 year old Cali SE with 45500 miles. VW quote was c. £7k fitted.
Be careful if you drive it before getting it checked.
My post from Sept is DSG Broken

When you drove your Cali, was there any apparent noise, juddering or anything else, from the broken bits ?

Mine is a March 2010 180BHP bi turbo with 88K on the clock.

Thanks

The place you mentioned is 5 minutes from me I have never heard of them.
I would be happy to drive past to see what it looks like is you want. I could do it tomorrow if that is helpful.

Thanks, I did visit them last Friday, seemed like a proper set up with a few staff all working away.

Thanks.

Umm. I’m not sure what happened to the long reply I posted last week but just to confirm, there was no noise at all from my gearbox when it stopped working. It just failed to change into 2nd or 4th even in manual and reverse wouldn’t function. Just high revs as if the clutch (in a normal manual gearbox) was slipping. Re-setting it got things working again and warning lights, flashing D were rectified. A couple of miles later-on way to garage-it happened again.
Best of luck with your repair. I’m waiting for a replacement reconditioned and guaranteed box from Europe.

Just about to get round to having my DSG repaired.

Does anyone have experience of either Gloucester Road Gearboxes or Milta Technology, both in Bristol.

Thanks

At long last collected my van today after repair, following the breakdown last October.

Owned from new in 2010, new engine fitted in 2016, I decided to go for new rather than reconditioned parts, as I plan to keep it long term.

I had Gloucester Road Gearboxes in Bristol do the works which come with a 12 months or 12000 miles warranty. OEM parts used.

Pricey at £5730 inc…New Clutch Assembly, New Mechatronic Unit, New Planet Gear Parts, Coding, DSG Oil etc.

Fingers crossed for some reliability.
