Just been quoted £800 plus fitting for a new EGR Valve. Allegedly it has just gone up from ~£500. Feeling my two veg are being tightly held by VW. What have others been charged?

180 BiT 2013

Yes the £800 is near the mark a lot of stripping out the whole front has to come off unlike the 140

Thanks. Just the part is £800 plus 5 hours labour to fit it!

If you've no oil consumption and the new part is the latest D suffix, it will help your resale considerably to those in the know.

No oil consumption and the new EGR supersedes the last two (VW denied were ever faulty) so do see it as a good thing.... well apart from the cost!

No chance of any goodwill contribution if you've stayed with VW servicing?

As above the 180 is a big job most of the front of the vehicle has to be stripped off unlike the 140

Well on the plus side for £800 VW at least include a new oil filter with the EGR o_O

Yes., and this EGR thing is getting out of hand. Can someone please help? Yikes! Just had this from the VW Commercial garage in Aberdeen. We are talking nearly £1700!!! "As discussed, I'm emailing in regards to your EGR cooler/valve. I have spoken with workshop who advise that an internal fault has occurred within the control motor which is sticking within the EGR valve, this will cause incorrect operation whilst driving; resulting in an engine management coming on in your dashboard. The quote we gave you of £1408.83 + VAT includes a reduced labour rate and a discount of £100 on the part itself.

We have quoted 8 hours labours as the front end of the vehicle needs to be stripped and removed to gain access. We have incorporated the initial diagnostic cost of £125 into the cost of total repair

I am not going to accept this without checking around. That means talking to you guys. This seems ridiculous. Can someone please advise.

My Cali is 2011 180 and had done 60,000 miles and I have already replaced the EGR valve once.

Help!

Had mine done last week and cost £1000+VAT at my trusted VW Independent technician near Brighton. Took five hours in total. Not charged for diagnostic as only took 5 mins.

Get it mapped out
Was told if EGR blanked off / deleted DPF can’t regen so that would have to be removed too. As MOT failure to do that I didn’t.

Many thanks. That is one hell of a lot cheaper than my quote. I'll use that, if you don't mind, in negotiations. Unfortunately, living in Aberdeen, I have to go along way to find another dealer. I think I am being quoted 'Oilfield' prices.

As VW charge twice as much per hour as my guy does it may not help much. Might be worth posting on the VWT4/5/6 forums or on one of the many T5 forums on Facebook to see if there is a good independent VW specialist near you.

you can just delete the egr in the ecu makes no difference to the mot as its not physically removed

My understanding is if you only delete the EGR in ECU and it’s actually stuck open (or was it closed?) you’ll get an excessive EGT which can cause the turbos to fail etc. Also if the EGR / cooler fins are disintegrating and being sucke in then leaving it in you will end up needing a new engine. Is that correct??

no i dont think so . maybe @vwguru will explain

I heard that you can get a EGR blanking plate, screw it on
a bit of a re-programme and bobs yer uncle.
And it doesn´t have anything to do with the DPF.

Thought that too but was told a functional EGR is vital part of the DPF regen. No EGR, no proper regen = blocked DPF. Would sure like conformation on which one is correct.

As far as I am aware on the T5 it’s both or neither.
MOTs have become stricter. You cannot remove the DPF it has to have its internals removed.

Both or neither is what I was told by my anti upsell ex VW tech. Removing DPF internals is an MOT fail and also an eco crime.. IMO

You can definitely map out the EGR without affecting the DPF regen. You also need to put blanking plates on, especially if the valve is stuck open. Alternatively, you can now get a plug-in EGR simulator instead of mapping for easier undoability:

Thanks for the conformation. Out of interest would fitting a blanking plate 100% stop the possibility of engine damaging debris from old type EGR being ingested?
