The Cali engine is now 9 years old and like it's owner doesn't start well on these cold mornings.
I've ordered a replacement Varta and know that I'll need to update the settings via carista but is there anything else I need to be aware of?

No. You might get some warning lights on the Dashboard on first start, because certain calibrations might have been lost. Driving a few miles will reset everything.

For optimum performance you use something like carista to tell the computers there is a new battery installed.

I'm being let down by Tanya batteries and their courier.
Replacement was due to be delivered Wednesday then was shown as out for delivery yesterday. And has been indicated as out for delivery twice today.
Definitely not a happy bunny.

Tanya - damm autocorrect

3 days the Cali has been off the road with the engine battery on a ctek, which still hasn't completed its cycle.
I'm thinking of going to Halfords and getting a Yuasa battery instead and returning the Varta to Tanya if it ever arrives.

Order one with fitting from AA / RAC. Free fitting if you are a member and they will also do a full scan + code battery (if required). If your issue is not battery related they refund full cost; can normally get same/next day service.

I had a similar issue some months ago courier not great said they had lost it in transit then I received 2 batteries the next day :bananadance2

Looked at RAC & AA, neither will quote for a battery replacement at home

Battery was finally delivered. Fitted in about 30mins, don't appear to have to program it in as stop/start, etc worked straight away.
Good job I didn't get the Yuasa from Halfords as their 'documented' replacement model is 40mm bigger

I'm in need of a new battery (with start-stop compatibility) but see quite a few different models listed, the one installed is a VARTA 7P0 915 105 (12V 68Ah 380 A DIN) but going on what info I have for this doesn't appear to be beefy enough for start-stop so maybe that's why it has failed soon than I would have liked, the AGM115 comes up on searches but I think is a bit long but not much so could fit?
Any thought folks please?

This is the same dimensions as original fitted by VW, but a later model.

thanks for the speedy help WG much appreciated

Mmm can’t recode the new battery on a Snap-On Legend OBD 2 saying not supported and a mechanic friend says his kit won’t do it either because it’s too old 2014

Doesn't matter that much. It will just take a little longer, driven miles for the vehicle computer/ smart alternator to adapt the charging profile to the new battery.
Carista or OBD11 will do it if you really want to code it.

if its got start stop it needs programming. where abouts in Hampshire are you?
if it can be done throuh vcds, im happy to give it a try

Thanks for the offer of help that very generous but I’m in Bedfordshire

I swapped the battery on my 2015 van some time last year and there were no code problems, but the more recent vans are probably fussier..

But you can always use the "temporary bridge" method using another vehicle's battery via a pair of jump leads as a secondary source to keep voltage flowing while you do the swap.

All the coding does is tell the vehicle it has a new battery. It then wipes the personalised charge profile that evolved over time as the old battery aged/degraded and uses a basic pre-programmed profile to start with.

Not coding just means the vehicle computer takes a little longer/ miles to adapt the old profile to the new battery.

Both methods mean the charging system is not initially personalised for the new battery but coding just speeds up the personalisation.

If it’s similar to BMW’s IBS system, it won’t deliver the usual benefits of a new battery—for example, reduced reliance on the alternator, which otherwise introduces parasitic drag and negatively affects MPG.
Like I said if you are local to Aldershot I’m happy to give it a go FOC through VCDS

It was buying a new battery that triggered me to buy a Carista, they’re dead cheap and you make your money back on this alone.

My Cali is stop/start. I bought a new battery (Bosch S5 A11) from Tayna as identified by them, fitted it and that was it. No programming and it's running fine.

I read that the life of the battery can be fairly significantly reduced if not coded. I don’t know how true that is.
