Long story short I have been told this is a lack of oil in the rear main crank shaft. Link to issue below.

Weird noise

The video was taken in a few months ago and is louder now. Garage are trying a new oil pump to see if that resolves the issue, but they still aren't completely sure. They are talking about a new engine and it's only done 27k miles! We had an EGR failure a few months back that took ages to diagnose and that has potentially caused something new.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

look at the Aux belt tensioner, they Rattle , it a know thing and an easy cheap fix.

lack of oil in “rear main crank shaft“ !
New engine !
The crank shaft has several bearings if one was gone they all would be very soon after. highly unlikely at 27k miles.

engine oil pressure can be checked, but the basics should be ruled out before even considering the engine being shot !

Have a look at this thread

If there was no oil in the "rear main Crankshaft" a couple of minutes withe the engine running should solve it permanently by putting most of the internal parts of the engine through a hole in the block!

As others have suggested, timing belt tensioners, alternator or steering pump are far more likely culprits.

If alternator, noise should change if you turn on head lights heated seats etc to load it up.
If power steering, noise should change by turning the wheel lock to lock.

Is it manual or DSG? if manual outside chance of a clutch release bearing. If auto what about a failing Dual Mass Flywheel?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The van is a DSG. Either I will suggest these things to the garage to check that they have tested them, or just accept that it needs to go in to VW. Almost 2 months off the road now and to say it's getting frustrating is an understatement.

If I knew the sound was definately not an internal engine issue I would be happy to have it back and drive it until it goes somewhere else, but I'm concerned I'm going to end up causing more damage to it!

I would be more worried about anything to do with the cam belt than anything internal - if it was internal it would have gone bang by now, if its cam belt tensioner & it seizes it could be a massive bill.

How old is the van? any warranty left?

We had the cambelt changed under warranty as it had developed a squeak noticeable on cold start on our 2016 T6 at about 2 1/2 years old - No questions diagnosed and sorted.

So who is looking at the vehicle at the moment? A VW Independent/specialist?

Could it be the exhaust? Downpipe?

Turns out it was a faulty oil pump. The chirping sound has stopped, for now. Fingers crossed that's the end of it.
