Our March 2024 Ocean has covered around 5500 miles.
A week or so ago, the oil service indicator was indicating a change required in a further 7400 miles/300 days.
Given the low mileage and the fact that a lot of the mileage is short stop/start journeys, I decided that leaving it another 10 months before a 1st oil change was too long.
I get the manufacturer's interest in providing extended service intervals as it helps reduce fleet maintenance costs, but is it in the best interests of engine longevity? Personally, I don't think so.
Rightly or wrongly, I decided the biggest issue with the oil would be dilution from diesel as a consequence of the DPF regeneration process, rather than metallic particulates circulating around the engine. At 5500 miles, the filter must surely still have life left in it?
I have a vacuum oil extraction pump with a pipe that threads down the dipstick tube, so I drew out all the old oil and refilled the engine with the correct VAG507.00 spec. 0W30 oil. It took just over 7 litres to bring the oil level to half way up the dipstick.
When it hits 2 years and time for a main service, then the dealership can do another oil change and replace the filter.
