Just had a service completed at VW, and the report has identified all 4 tyres have excessive wear on the inner shoulders. The worst is nearly through to the canvas. The outside wall of the near side rear has cracking also. We’ve covered 23k miles, and the general tread depth is around 3 to 4mm, so I was expecting to change them soon, but I don’t want this to happen to the replacement tyres - which will be Michelin Cross Climate 2’s this time.

The tyres are factory fitted Bridgestones 255/45R18 103H, and have been inflated per the guidance on the door pillar throughout the 3 years we’ve had the van. The van is a 6.1 150 DSG.

So….
Is this common? I recall seeing similar photos on a thread, but can’t find the post now?
Any advice to stop this happening again?
Would alignment of all 4 wheels be a good idea?

[edit] I should have said, the outer shoulders are not showing any unusual wear, apart from the rear near side.

Essential to get a 4 wheel alignment check done.

You can get adjustable polybushes for the front and rear suspension to set camber angles correctly. Front Caster can also be set.
I did it and although costly was well worth it in terms of both tyre wear and driving control/handling.

to your question - is this common - probably, but people then realise it too late. I would say, more on the 235s and the 255s than others.

I would do two things
1. a 4 wheel alignment from a reputed dealer who knows transporter suspensions. Also, someone who has a hunter alignment rig.
2. move to polybushes. I have been planning this for long, but not budgeted for it yet.

Right now you do not have an option but to change all tyres, but in future, rotate the tyres each year as that also helps with uneven tread wear, but not if all 4 are scrubbing the inside ... which will go away after a hunter wheel alignment.

For you - https://dav-tec.co.uk/ - will be a good shout. Check this thread on Dav Tec over at the t6 forum - https://t6forum.com/threads/dav-tec-who-we-are-what-we-do.30735/

Why didn’t vw recommend a full wheel alignment it’s not common ,really easy fix but once the tyres have run out it’s impossible to correct the run out wear,so new tyres and wheel alignment then check regularly for any uneven wear.

Because of the lack of adjustment on the rear axle, the tyres wear faster on the inside wall, because of the weight causing the wheels to have very negative camber.
The front axle tyres wear faster at the outside, because of taking corners too quick with all the weight causeing the tyres to bend to the inside.
And this is only on 215's. With lower pressure (mine are on 3.5 bar) and slower cornering, it would be less.
The only thing is, they don't wear out on the out/inside faster than the middle thread reaching 1,6mm of depth.
I also think it has more to do with the wider tyres. They could of course adjust the alignment to the limits so the wear would be more even.

Yes - same thoughts here. The service rep said “a bit of uneven wear” and I didn’t see the video till I got home. I will get a 4 wheel alignment done when changing the tyres in the next couple of weeks.

It took 3 goes to get mine right they blamed the large tyre and the operator not getting the tyre central in the pads on the machine unreal lol
I have ocd now with uneven tyre wear

So I’ve had the tracking checked when fitting new tyres. The front was off by 0.1 deg so not much. The rear tracking was not an issue. However the camber on the rear was pretty severe. The fitters told me it couldn’t be adjusted and the only way to correct it was by installing harder, nylon bushes (poly bushes). I’m going to check this route out.

I'm on 15k miles of 18in CC and tyres are probably a little over half worn. I went down the powerflex route.
