IMG_0353.JPG I did see a thread on this topic but can't find it again. Just got back from Morocco and had intended to keep a log. Bearing in mind that I went at 48 hours notice you may gather that I live in the moment so that didn't happen! Anyway the best I got was 49.8 and the worst 42.6 but that was driving at 130 km/h. Think I've got a good'un!

That is astonishing. Here's my latest log:
Date ---- Odo -- Mileage Litres - MPG - MFD
------------1089
06-Apr -- 1600 - 511 ----- 72.91 - 31.9
14-Apr -- 2099 - 499 ----- 66.86 - 34.0
17-Apr -- 2690 - 591 ----- 72.81 - 37.0
27-Apr -- 3196 - 506 ----- 70.01 - 32.9
10-May - 3681 - 485 ----- 68.64 - 32.2 -- 38.3
30-May - 4083 - 402 ----- 66.29 - 27.6 -- 33.7

Lately I've been doing a lot of short trips in London, emptying our house in preparation for it being let.

The MFD seems to be underestimating fuel consumption by about 5mpg.

Incredible fuel consumption - maybe I should hire you as my driver! Would love to see some pics of your trip to Morocco, if you feel like sharing.

Trying to upload a few pics without success. I'll persevere but don't hold your breath!

You maybe interested in this record of fuel consumption. Mixture of driving, town, urban and motorway (not over 75mph). The MFD is uselessly inaccurate and often tells me I have achieved over 45mpg!! The cumulative figure on the MFD currently reads 44.2mpg.

You need to work on the formatting...

Now my MFD fuel consumption showed 31.8 mpg when I left Norway whereas Full tank figures, admittedly using different pumps, so different cut-offs, and use of the Parking Heater most nights, showed a calculated figure of 33.1.

Mind you the MFD figure has dropped travelling on the Swedish, Dutch and German motorways in windy conditions, now down to 30.6, but still being overtaken by a lot of T5/6 Caravelles and vans especially on the de-restricted Autobahn sections.
That's life.

Gosh Tom, are you a school teacher?;)

I did format it but seems to have been lost when posted. When I saw post I figured it was still readable.......will try again.

There you go.

I have just transcribed my little fill-up book to an app on my phone - Fuelio - which is free and appears ad-free.
The app calculates the mpg for you, can log other costs, be used for service/mot/bed reminders, etc., and had some reporting functions.
My MFD is reading 40.5mpg on the cumulative log.
Fuelio gives my average over the same period as 35.5mpg.
Looking through the individual fill-up, the highest achieved is 37.4mpg...
For the life of the vehicle (apart from dealer's initial diesel contribution) the average is 34.3mpg over 9100 miles.
MFD hopelessly inaccurate and gives one a false sense of economy.
I know, compared to my satnav, the Speedo is fast by nearly 10% (3mph @30: 5mph@60), so MFD mileage may also be out (I'm assuming the same sensors are involved), but that error would come through on the manual (or Fuelio) calculations too.
Fuelio also gives you a running cost of your fuel bill.. quite scary!

An alternative to Fuelio above is Sprintmonitor. I think it's German in origin, so there are lots of other similar vehicles to compare yourself with. Good or bad depending on your mpg!

I was happy with the mpg we have just got on our last trip to Scotland in SusiBus T6 considering it's a 204 dsg 4motion, naively not taking into account that the MFD was speaking on behalf of VW, and therefore would be programmed to enhance the figures. Jabberwocky's figures indicate it could be by a considerable amount, if so I think it is appalling that it should be so misleading.

I'd be interested in hearing what "enhancement" people are getting via their MFD.

Oh yes we got 36mpg on the motorway trip up to Scotland, not being that careful mpg wise, and including one hour of stop/start traffic. Then we got 32mpg doing lots of really uneconomical, stop/start, take a photo, narrow hilly road driving, which on an engine that had only do 2000 miles at the start, and 4000 at the end, was good for a fully loaded Cali, but if I have to subtract 5+/- mpg maybe not so good.
