Fuel economy

I’ve always driven economically so get the best I can. I don’t, however make life a misery by constantly working out the economy. In the Highlands it’s difficult, if not suicidal to drive at over 50 mph as the roads are generally very poor and full of logging lorries who will run you off the road if they can.
The luxury of motorways doesn’t affect us so fuel consumption is very varied depending on your journey.

Just been to & from the Scottish Highlands --

measured over ~1000 miles my new Beach (with awning + bike rack) averaged ~34 miles per gallon, is this OK or excessive?

i was driving about 70mph on the motorways which made up the bulk of the distance
Interesting! I’ll have to see what my Ocean does when I get some motorway driving in on our journeys down ‘south’.
I don’t have a bike rack so not sure how much drag this would cause you.

Must take you forever getting anywhere.
Consider the plight of the Supreme Leader.

He travelled from Pyongyang to Hanoi by train with a top speed of ~40 mph. It took him two and a half days. He then met his US counterpart, they shook hands and then Trump walked out of the meeting, leaving Kim Jong Un to spend two and a half days travelling back home.

Yes, but he had a lot more steam pulling the train on the way back...tank engine.jpg

Do you know the name of the app?
I use an app called sprintmonitor. It would be great if a few others would start using it. The reason I settled on that one is that it is free, originates from Germany and you can compare your mpg with other similar vehicles. Currently I rank 8th out of 65 T6s with DSG and same size engine. It's interesting that even the best mpgs don't seem to get close to the mpgs on the vehicle computer reported here and on other sites.

Try telling that to a HGV driver, speed limit increased to 60 mph in 2015 for anything over 7.5 ton, but most travel between 60 - 65mph

trucks up to 44 tonnes are legally allowed up to 60 mph.on motorways. They are all usually restricted to 56 mph for some reason. The 40 limit on A roads was increased to 50 mph
Any truck going over 60 is from Ireland .....

The real reason the meeting ended early:-

  • Get Daily Mash headlines:

KIM Jong-un has confirmed that the US-North Korea summit ended when President Trump attempted to kiss him.

I have said this a lot of some of the Facebook forums where owners have quoted 40-45mpg.
It’s impossible. They have either mis-calculated or relied on inaccurate information.

I can’t hit their quoted figures in mine. Best I’ve had is 30mpg 204 bi turbo 2017 2wd Cali.

One guy is adamant that his 4mo Caravelle gets high 40s...???

The app takes only seconds to complete. Put in odometer reading and litres refilled, and the app does the rest. I also use it for adblue consumption.
And the biggest problem is, how do you know the liters filled? :)
Pumps can give even bigger %inaccuracy depending on a country. Over a 1-2 liters easily which can be over 20%

Wonder if they complimented each other on their hair?

Twice I’ve had over 40 mpg. But the one above came from a £99 under-fill. It was a prepay pump which stops at £99.

I don’t know how accurate pumps are. I’ve always assumed they are carefully calibrated and regularly checked to deliver within certain tolerances.

I think at best it is just a rough figure that we can compare to other vehicles we have owned over the years, my old Escort GT probably went though much more fuel than the California, mind you I drove it like a lunatic and petrol sold for 4 gallons/£1 at the time.
My long term average on the MDF is showing 39+mpg, likely to somewhat optimistic but it does cheer me up.

MPG doesn't worry me anymore. Deprecation is the biggest cost per mile. We owned a vehicle that did 30mpg however for ever gallon of fuel it used it cost us £47 in deprecation.

I have a runaround now that does about 15mpg but deprecation is non existent.
I recall a magazine one year trial on the real ownership costs between two cars. One a Mini (the original one) and a Bentley (big sedate type saloon). The Mini was way ahead on fuel used but had various faults plus tyres adding to the bill, the Bentley had a pair of wiper blades and fuel only. Mini depreciated but the Bentley appreciated slightly. Result being that the Bentley was cheaper to run in real cost terms.

Did they exclude depreciation?

56MPH or 90kph restriction was an EU Directive. safety?
50mph limit on A roads is not in Scotland, still 40mph.
Even though HGV's have a 60mph limit on motorways if they exceed the 56mph limit they can be prosecuted.

When stuck behind an HGV it's the law that dictates its speed not the driver being awkward.

To get back on topic the above speed limiter restrictions had a negative result on HGV fuel consumption as it is no longer possible to take a run at a hill enabling getting up/over without a gear change. Now it's slow at the bottom and numerous gear changes to get up/over.

But as discussed in another thread. You drive at 56mph.
Just not going to happen with most people.
