thought I could simply plug charger to the 240v socket ... but clearly not as it don't work! Does the 240v socket only work when on hook up? any advice on charging a mobile when with the bus?

The 3 pin 240v only works on hook up. The 2 pin socket works of the leisure batteries, or buy a 12v charger, cost peanuts on ebay.

You could either use one of the ciggy sockets or the inverter socket (with a suitable adapter for UK plug of course)

Yes david the 240v socket only works on hook up you have 2 choices
1.buy an adapter for your invertor behind the passenger seat and plug it in there.
2. Buy a cigarette lighter charger and charge from the 12v sockets

Unless yours is Beach, I don't think that they have 2 pin socket.

Your mobile phone must have a good battery if this is the first time you've charged it since 2011:bananadance

blimey how quick were you all! and rugby on TV as well!
OK looks like time to go and buy a 12v charger
thanks! I love this forum!

Yes we mistakenly bought some very hard to tell until they only work once then you know

I have a double USB 12V from Amazon basics. Excellent bit of kit. I have my MiFi and Mobile phone on charge all the time with it. Google Amazon basics, I've dropped it, drowned it, baked it and trod on it and still it goes on happily charging my bits and pieces.

We use the inverter docket and adapter from calikev. Also bought a cheap supermarket kit for the cigarette socket , so covered in all areas.

Price and picture doesn't look right, check Belkin site. Plus read reviews below the item. I have seen them on market stalls for 99p no packaging etc.

Belkin are good but if you find one under £5 it is probably not original. Spent money on mine and bought exactly same design for my Dad but only £1.50. Without the original to compare with it is difficult to spot a fake but lack of quality is obvious.

I bought a double 12v socket from Maplins. Plug it in and stuff the unit into the hole above the cup holders. It fits perfectly. Awkward to use the cup holder though. I sometimes use the euro socket with an adapter.

There has been much said on this topic already, only thing I would add is to check the charger output, for modern phones and tablets you really need 2.5 amps. Many older and cheaper chargers are 1 amp only.

I have a plastic box lid, just big enough for a macbook air 13". When travelling that lid slides into the rear seat pocket, along with macbook and I can charge the laptop via the eurosocket.

The protruding upper edge of the box lid provides a platform just wide enough for both I-Phone and Huawei modem to sit on, with the help of blue tac or elastic hair band. They are charged via a double USB 12v plugged into the kitchen socket.

All within arms reach of the driver, all being charged on the move, no untidy wires dangling about in front.

When stationary I use a 12v direct charger for laptop, if ever needed, and the plastic box lid becomes a handy tray for a clumsy granny to put tea, coffee, bowls of soup on etc.
