How to attach drive away awning

Just bought T6 California Ocean in February and still finding out how best to use it. I have factory fitted roll out awning but it doesn’t have the 4 or 6mm groove on the outside edge to allow me to attach a drive away awning I have. Is there any suggestions on how to fit it or will I have to remove the roll out awning?

Hi Craig, you need to get a awning kit with the proper size for it. There are a few variants in the club shop, just search awning and it should be among the top results.

If you open the awning a foot or so and lift the front flap then the 6mm groove / runner is there , apologies for mixing imperial and metric.....

there is a groove . flip up the lid and you will see the 'C' channel. you can slot in a connector or side panel there,

We find threading connectors through the slots fine when doing the initial set up, but a complete pain when driving away & reconnecting.

Our current driveway awning has a sleeve in it to take a pole , we put the pole in & then tuck it behind the awning casing & wrap the velcro straps around the awning casing at each end to secure it in position, its easier to do than explain.

Previously we have also used a figure of eight channel tucked in the top of the awning casing, its ok but usually needs about ten pairs of hands to keep them in place whilst winding the awning back in to secure them.

Also used is just wound out the awning an inch or so & tucked the connecting fabric of the driveaway over the top front of the van awning & wound it back in to trap it.

Finally if its not raining / windy etc we just haven't bothered connecting, just wound the van awning out to overlap the driveaway.

If we have room, we usually wind out the awning (to clear the door or even more), then attach the driveaway. I hate connecting right up to the van as it feels so claustrophobic. So we have the wind out, wound out and connect to that. It makes driving back and connecting easy because a long as you’re parallel it doesn’t matter if your distance away isn’t spot on.

It gives you extra space for cooking out if it’s rainy. If the weather’s bad or we need privacy I connect good quality shower curtains to act as flaps/curtains, they can be tied back when you don’t need them down. Last year because of all the extra space we didn’t bother with our shower tent, I just fixed up some extra shower curtains in the “tunnel” of the driveaway awning for a shower cubicle. It worked great, at festivals especially.

For the reasons you give, we are considering replacing it with a:

All we then need do is wind out the canopy to the gazebo opening, and, if we want extra privacy, hang a side panel from the awning arm.

Disadvantage will be in heavy rain. You’ll have water running down in the wind out awning bit. We did this once and ended up with a soggy gap between van an awning. Had to set up a tarp which was more bother than connecting the driveaway.

Interesting thought, but I'm not sure how much different it would be from our favourite setup.

That’s the way we do it too. I think if you’re not connecting there will be a BIG difference in heavy rain.

Wind-out Beach awning: compatible with drive-away awnings??

Hi, Thinking about a drive-away awning and wondering if they can be fitted over the wind-out awning? Does it need to be removed? This would be no big deal and would remove some drag. Cheers, Mike and Maddy

Couple of other ways to do as well. Has the advantage of lifting it up a bit which helsp prevent water pooling on the tunnel roof.




Shows the height difference and a lot easier to put back on if you go out in the van.

Hi we have recently bought a Vango hexaway drive away awning and an additional Vango Kadar strip set, we have yet to use it (although we have pitched the hexaway in the garden, but the kadar strip set seems far too long and is much longer than the awning cassette. It may seem a stupid question, but are you supposed to cut it to size? Thank you

You can cut it or just tuck it out if the way depending on the extra length

They were pictures of the Vango Hexaway and Vango AirHub Hex, since upgraded to the Hexaway II hence the picture links disappearing as the Vango website was changed.

In the end we bought a nearly new Hexaway second hand.

We have a Kampa drive away awning and we were wondering the same how to connect to a T6 California, as we had a vw conversion with a fiamma awning, which had a groove on it, easy to see, but nothing on the Cali wind out awning .

There is a channel, but it's hidden. Lift the front and you'll see it underneath.
