If you visit Holy Island read the signs

Happens quite a lot sadly, folks think it looks ok and drive over after the cut off time.

No accounting for stupidity it is not as though tide tables are not displayed at each end of the causeway.
I did wonder about getting cut off on Holly island spending evening and the night in the van as they could not move you on if the tide was in! But maybe a bit like a "Wickerman" trip.

Best place is up near the Castle on NT land (display sticker or card if a member) as "In town" people trying to overnight are treated with all the welcome of last nights vindaloo meeting today's piles :(

We were up there a few weeks ago. It was a stunning day and we had the whole massive beach on the north side of the island to ourselves.

The island is lovely for a day trip but they do say no overnight camping on the island and I personally would be inclined to respect that.

Yes, amazing that anyone gets stuck on the causeway, it must take some truly epic stupidity to do that.

Think it was in the Netherlands just a few weeks ago someone drowned it the same situation ...

Maybe there should be some kind of warden on then and a small toll if it Happens quite a lot or something like trains barriers,

However, i can here the inner thoughts of the tourists mind working......."i can make it, i can defo make it, i still got time :Stig ......BUGGER! :talktothehand:oops::sorry"

It just happens to be quite a tidal inrush, from two sides.

It can be very appealing, a gentle tide, the causeway just covered, a bit late leaving and faced with a 6 hour delay.... that's when you realise the causeway is a lot longer than you thought and the tide very much quicker than expected.

I can not agree with @MarkVw2017 adding a warden would spoil the ambience of the whole drive over to Holy Island. Tidal conditions are well posted on each side of the crossing.
Just a thought, dont worry, im not the Holy Island Causeway troll :sad
Ive not even been there, but remember we live in a society of safety warnings like "may contain nuts" on packets of nuts because theres people out there that need that little bit of extra hand holding or in this case with the horse box, spoke very little English

I’d love to listen in on the conversation with the Insurance Company.

You did what?

Must confess.
One year myself and some friends did the crossing. I checked the tide times the night before on the Internet.
Drove up and straight across to the gasp of people waiting/standing at the start of the crossing.
Driving across, we all noticed the water either side of the road and rising. Luckily made it to the island unscathed.

Double checked the tide times and I had looked at the wrong month. We crossed around high tide, but fortunately they were small tides.

Mistakes happen.
My wife stopped trusting me with important travel information after that episode .
:headbang

Just for the record

When is a horse box a camper van??

For those wanting to watch acts of stupidity, get up to Holy Island and sit at either end of the causeway when tide is due in and watch some numpty trying to get across. Hilarious if it wasn't potentially dangerous!!
