Hello - we've had our Cali since April this year, and we've had some great weekends/mini breaks away so far. We're looking at Il De Rey as a possible destination next year. Does anyone have any recommendations for sites there? Any ideas/tips would be most welcome! Thanks

We've been four years in a row. Beautiful place with fantastic cycling. We prefer the flower camping site at La Flotte - laid back, not too big, swimming pool, 10 mins walk from the beautiful La Flotte harbour for an evening meal or just to mosey around.

This year we spent one night in the at the aire in Les Portes en Re at the far end of the island. Basic but lovely and quiet with toilets open all night. Ate at 'la Cabanne' restaurant on the beach there which is a real find. Simple place with great food and a stunning view.

Thanks for reply - definitely need to check this out. I like that it's laid back too. I love this researching bit -almost as good as the holiday!

We stayed here in June this year:

We planned to stay for a couple of days an ended up staying a week. Out of season so we didn't book, though in August the island is apparently packed. We loved it and both the site and the island are amoungst our favourite places. This site is at the quite tip of the island, with fantastic cycling. There is a bus service that runs the length of the island if you don't want to drive. The site also has an electric Renault Zoe for rent. The pitches vary and the site is happy for you to chose from amoungst those available. We chose one that was on the upper terrace.

To get an impression of the island, try "Cycling with Molière" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2207050/ )

Thanks for your info - much appreciated. We too shall be going in June (no longer bound by school holidays, thanks goodness!).

End of June/ beginning of July a good time. Did that for 6 years. Never used the car once we were on the island. Cycled everywhere. Excellent pastry shop in St Martine and a lovely Bar Tabac opposite on the harbour wall for coffee and croissant.

We’re off to Ile de Rey later this year. We’re deliberately taking a very leisurely 3 day drive down from Calais with a view to exploring a couple of places en-route. Any recommendations for places of interest and campsites? (Excluding Normandy, we often go there).

I spent 3 days, 2 nights on the Ile de Re a few weeks ago. Perfect island for cycling with the dedicated bicycle routes across and around the Island. Most notable points of interest are lighthouse, the picturesque harbour villages and stunning uncrowded beaches. If wild camping is your thing there was a great free carpark (7pm to 9am) across the small bay from La Flotte with public WC a few meters away. St Martin de Re is probably the most picturesque place. Overall perhaps the highlight of my 2 week trip for scenery.

Don’t whatever you do ride through the salt marsh area at dusk on bikes … we did + it was bug hell . I must have eaten a kilo of them.

Seriously … great island. We loved this little campsite…. Can’t wait to go back

Thanks both. We’re all sorted for Ile de Rey where we’ll be for 7 days. What I was looking for was advice on a couple of sights/campsites on the journey down.

Rennes, Nantes, Vitre, Puy du Feu. Avoid St Nazaire and Pornic unless you are heavily into cruise ship building, and Salcombe with an accent.

We’re booked to stay on Ile de Rey for 7 days and have just booked to stay at a campsite called Haliotis, Mont Saint Michel for a few nights on the way down.

We've stayed at Camping de la plage between Carnac and La Trinite-sur-mer, you can easily cycle to both towns, also Camping la Baie across the road and both by the beach and have pools.
They both take ACSI.

Top post resurrection ! We also have a hankering to do this trip, it’s got to be 15 years since we last visited.
