We are going up to Scotland heading to the Isle of Skye. This will be our first trip where are planning to be off grid for a few nights. The question I have 'Is it acceptable to have pop top up or not?'

Yes, no issues. The only reason some do not put the roof up is to disguise what they are doing.

Just respect the people and area you are stopping in - some do not and this gets peoples backs up and gives us a bad name.

Thank you for the advice, will certainly take it on board.

Or when not in Scotland and may need a quick getaway!

It’s a real remote area - truly wild as well as stunning scenery. Note if you are planning a trip the Corran Ferry is out of service for repairs. But hey take The A830 from Fort William via Glenfinnan and the Lochailort road to Acharacle and on to Kilchoan. We use LochShiel campsite and Ardnamurchan site at Kilchoan. Small basic sites but very well located.
You must visit Castle Tioram near Acharacle. Great walks there and wonderful photography spot. From Kilchoan take the road to Point of Ardnamurchan lighthouse ( great little cafe there operated by the community) and the most stunning beach nearby Sanna Bay. Our return route is ferry to Tobermory Mull the ferry to Oban. We stop off at The Tobermory Fish company for smoked trout - enjoy

We may head this way back home and spend a little time there. Thank you for the information it will be most useful. Have a great trip, we may run into you - its a small world.

We just back from the NC500 and saw tops up and down. Down was in the less remote areas, up was generally in the real wilds where there were very few people and access was limited. Just bear in mind that “wild camping” access laws for Scotland only apply to tents and specifically prohibit motorised vehicles, so if going “off grid” be careful and don’t be surprised if the local rozzers come and move you along. We used local sites for all our stops and most of them had drop by zones for campers to just turn up. Not the best pitches on site, but they always accommodated.

We’re going up next week. Were sites busy?
We last went there pre-covid, pre-campervan explosion - stunning place, hoping to go to outer Hebrides this time. You enjoy?

Yup, fabulous trip. Knacked now though. 10 days away. Sites had spaces but you could tell the season was just starting - some were full - only Dunnet Head and Loch Ness were quiet. The Loch Lomand site was full till June. Nearly all smaller indies allowed stop ins though, just arrive early, they have none EHU side zones for drop ins. They savvy enough to not turn away biz. The only place we had not been able to book was Sango Sands so we turned up at 2pm and got a cracking sea view EHU pitch on hard standing. The best site by far was Sheildaig.
