Hello all. 2020 will be the first year we're able to travel outside of school holidays, with our window being late April to second week in June. Each time we've tried to visit the Italian Lakes in July/August we've struggled to find campsites. Do people have experience of visiting this region during May, and in particular is it possible to just turn-up at lakeside campsites and expect there to be space outside of the peak Summer months? Many thanks!

The closer to April the better your chance. We did sardinia in early May and found places no problem without booking. The closer to June you get you might want to pre book. Italians still have the winter coats on in April however we noticed alot of German/Swiss campers about so popular sites may still be full in April/May.

Put 45.824672,9.079057 in the gps and its a little car park on the side of lake como, easy accessible for Californias and those wanting to "stealth camp". Parking bays look straight onto the lake.

Thanks for both replies - might do a bit of pre-planning if it's close to June. The car park looks good!

We did our honeymoon in May a few years ago, no problem getting a pitch at lake Garda but it was a big commercial holiday park, which wasn’t ideal.
Look at lake Lugano, we stayed there September this year and it was really nice

If you like swimming Garda is the best. Lake como have more beatiful houses and villages.
We have stayed end of july, early august, no problem without booking, there are so many camping sites so just drive to the next if the first is full.
